What to do and see in British Virgin Islands, British Virgin Islands: The Best National Parks

September 6, 2021 Vergie Nakamoto

Sailing, diving, fishing and soaking up the sun on perfect beaches is what it's all about on the 60 idyllic British Virgin Islands. Largest island Tortola, home to capital Road Town, is a 12 by three mile haven of white sand, lush green mountains, ruins and rum distilleries. Underwater caverns beckon from dramatic Virgin Gorda. Island time rules on laid-back Jost Van Dyke, where swim-up bars serve delicious rum concoctions. Pristine beaches lure visitors to beautiful coral island Anegada.

Devil's Bay National Park

A bay in Virgin Gorda amid enormous granite rocks with warm, shallow water.

I looooved swimming in the sea at this beach. The sand was so soft. Recommend wearing sport sandals or water shoes as there are several rocks getting into the water, as well as large rocks in the water.

Virgin Gorda Peak

There's even a tower on Virgin Gorda's highest peak to enhance the breathtaking and dizzying panorama.

We hiked from the lower entrance/parking area. It took maybe 45 minutes each way. We are in our early 50's, in good condition, and the hike itself seemed pretty easy. The observation tower has not been rebuilt since Irma knocked it down, but you can still climb up the boulder on top and see a beautiful birds-eye view of Spanish Town. On an island famous for its beautiful beaches, this hike is a nice change of pace for a couple hours. We really enjoyed the hike and will do it again next time we are on VG.

Pricly Pear Island offers such wonderful stretches of beach in shallow waters to allow you to playfully rest and relax with family and friends in the warm waters between Pricly Pear and Virgin Gorda. Food and drink available or you can grab a tour boat from Gumption on Virgin Gorda and head over for a day trip.

Sage Mountain National Park

The highest point in Tortola is accessible via a number of marked trails.

We drove to the park one afternoon while we were staying on Tortola, and the drive isn't for the faint of heart! Tortola roads are pretty intense, and this was no exception. Once there, we were greeted by Jim, who has a gift shop and a 2-table restaurant. He will get food and cook for you upon request. If we had been there longer, we would have tried it out. The trails are not too challenging or steep, and they are in good shape. From the observation deck you pretty much have a 360 degree view of the island and the islands in the distance. There are several options depending on how much time you have; a shorter loop and a longer loop. Either loop has fantastic views.

Mount Healthy National Park

An excellent symbol of the sugar plantation era in BVI, this park above Brewer's Bay features the intact remains of a stone windmill, once part of an 18th-century sugar plantation.
