The 10 Best Islands in British Virgin Islands, British Virgin Islands

May 16, 2022 Dorsey Hagwood

Sailing, diving, fishing and soaking up the sun on perfect beaches is what it's all about on the 60 idyllic British Virgin Islands. Largest island Tortola, home to capital Road Town, is a 12 by three mile haven of white sand, lush green mountains, ruins and rum distilleries. Underwater caverns beckon from dramatic Virgin Gorda. Island time rules on laid-back Jost Van Dyke, where swim-up bars serve delicious rum concoctions. Pristine beaches lure visitors to beautiful coral island Anegada.

The Dogs

This cluster of small islands is a favorite destination for yachters who enjoy its clear waters and abundant marine life.

I had to wait an hour for a Natio al Parks Trust buoy: it was worth it. We moored in the SW field of Great Dog. It is an easy swim from the buoys to the reefs/boulder field. Lots of cool fish. Deep trenches cut through the rock at the NW arm of the cove. Lovely experience and after 1pm there was no one waiting for a buoy (after us) even in the busiest time of the year. Highly recommended.

Guana Island

This wildlife sanctuary is dense with creatures, perhaps the densest in the world for an island of its size.

Landing on Guana Island in 2020 felt like a dream. We were hesitant; even thought of canceling. When Jason heard us wavering he moved right in - and he was so right, we can’t thank him enough. The various protocols and safety measures were, in the end, not so difficult to comply with, and the result of compliance if your destination was Guana was pure heaven. Our nights at the North Beach Cottage were healing. The combination of untouched natural beauty and the civilized comfort - the ever attentive staff and incredible kitchen - made this the best thing that could happen to us during this difficult time which for us began in March. We look forward to going back same time next year

Sandy Cay

A small island west of Tortola is prized for its natural botanical gardens and pristine white-sand beaches.

Reviewed By Jwolff70 - Virginia Beach, United States

Visited Sandy Cay while on a day charter, and spent a few hours relaxing on its pristine beaches and exploring the untouched nature preserve! My teens enjoyed walking the island, and spotting hermit crabs, bright yellow finches, doves, and the unspoiled beauty. Great place for nature lovers- quiet, peaceful, and certainly enjoyable! There is a VERY strong current getting on and off the island, so parents beware of little ones, who may not be strong swimmers!

Fallen Jerusalem

One of the tinier of the British Virgin Islands, often explored by sea kayakers.

If you are on a boat charter in the BVI's, head over to Fallen Jerusalem and grab one of the two park service mooring balls and beach the dinghy or snorkel in to explore this little uninhabited island. It is very similar to The Baths, but less crowded since you can only get there by boat. Great snorkeling and exploring!

Cooper Island

A small, isolated and charming island that serves as a mooring haven for yachts.

This was a great day stop for our group. We had to get up very early and reserve a Boaty Ball because they fill up fast. (Look into the app if you are sailing and want a mooring ball) The Beach was amazing and they have tables in the water to set your drink on. The bar staff were very friendly and had a great selection. The Rum Bar opened later in the day and was very impressive. The little shop has great items and some clearance to dig through. Highly recommend going to this location for a day!
