This is a popular destination for locals, Calgarians and visitors wanting something fun to do and see, but not wanting to drive too far. It's only a 45 minute drive from Calgary on good roads. The paved parking area has been beautifully expanded, with several extra pit toilets and lots of benches to use to sit and put on your gear. And there is truly something for everyone! On our recent visit mid-November, we saw mountain bikers and fat-tire bikers, trail runners, snowshoers, walkers, hikers and large family groups out for a stroll. There were even a few cross-country skiers, but there wasn't enough snow to groom the trails - skiers should always consult the web site for trail conditions. On this visit, we started with snowshoes, but there wasn't enough snow even for that, but enjoyed a good workout and excellent views using our micro spikes on our 9 km hike.

Prairie Mountain Hike

The bottom of this great trail is a bit deceiving, as there's usually very little snow there, being south-facing. But as you gain elevation, the snow and ice start to build up. Ice is especially worrisome, because this trail is quite popular with fit seniors, and a wrong fall is seldom good news for us older folks. We were VERY glad to have aggressive ice-grips on our recent summit walk, and even then, on the way back, one section that was steep did cause a little slip but no injury. You do need a bit fitness to enjoy this hike, and in the winter the right gear as well. But if you do have these, you'll never regret trying this excellent hike!
