Stjepan Grad - Blagaj Castle

Blagaj castle - locally known as Stjepan grad offers the best view of Mostar valley and an amazing scenic trek to the castle itself. Undergoing re-construction, it is a must see for lovers of history, especially those of pre-Ottoman history of Bosnia.

The castle sits high above Blagaj. If traveling by car, do not park in Blagaj but rather continue through the town using waze or google maps to climb up through town and park at the head of the trail that leads up to the castle. This will save one at least a half mile or more of uphill hiking. The trail has a sign saying it was improved through an international cooperation project with Mostar, and is in good shape. It took us about 30 minutes to hike to the top at a leisurely pace. During our entire time, we met only one family from Australia, a single tourist from Slovenia, and a local woman gathering wild sage for sale. The castle ruins at the top of the mountain are in good shape and offer impressive views of the valley below. A morning visit before the top heat of the day is a good option, followed by a lunch at one of the many restaurants along the headwaters of the Buna river down below in Blagaj. For anyone staying at a hotel in Mostar, this is a good, easy day trip.
