Bolton (/ˈbɒltən/ ( listen) or locally [ˈbɜʏtn̩]) is a town in Greater Manchester in North West England. A former mill town, Bolton has been a production centre for textiles since Flemish weavers settled in the area in the 14th century, introducing a wool and cotton-weaving tradition. The urbanisation and development of the town largely coincided with the introduction of textile manufacture during the Industrial Revolution. Bolton was a 19th-century boomtown, and at its zenith in 1929 its 216 cotton mills and 26 bleaching and dyeing works made it one of the largest and most productive centres of cotton spinning in the world. The British cotton industry declined sharply after the First World War, and by the 1980s cotton manufacture had virtually ceased in Bolton.

I took a tour of Victoria Hall in the centre of Bolton, together with other U3A members from Preston. Although the entrance was not particularly striking, the building was huge inside. Our excellent guide, Barry, took us on a two hour guided tour, exploring the various rooms, including the church which was built in the style of a music hall, the projector room and the museum. We were particularly fascinated by the Victorian cloakroom. Barry gave us an interesting history of the building and kept us all enthralled with his amusing tales. Thoroughly recommended.

An absolute gem. Can never understand why people complain about the Market Place, as The Vaults have proved a fantastic addition to the town centre. Even with empty units, there is still plenty to enjoy in there. Great place to visit.

Unveiled in February 1900, this impressive statue of Benjamin Alfred Dobson was modelled by Manchester sculptor John Cassidy. Commemorating this former Mayor of Bolton, he was also a textile machinery manufacturer, and was knighted on 9 August 1897. A Grade II listed building.

Turton tower is a house that has been evolving over the last 500 years. From a stone tower house in the 1400s, to the home of the Tudor Orrell and, later, the Victorian Kay Families, Turton Tower has been altered and adapted to suit the needs and tastes of those who lived here. It is because of these changes that Turton Tower is of national importance and unique in Northwest England. Today it still captures the spirit of those ages and displays some of the finest paintings and furniture in the region. Turton Tower is owned and run by Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council.

Our son got married on 2/11/19 at the wellbeing farm I really don’t know where to start with but here goes , the reception area is well thought out and was really welcoming. The staff were excellent and couldn’t have been more professional and couldn’t do enough for us . They provided large umbrellas for us to transfer from one building to the other as the weather wasn’t good . The wedding ceremony took place in the barn and it was outstanding ,the decorations were beautiful . The food was delicious we had light bites of fish and chips , mini burgers and miniature cottage pies .after the ceremony . The main meal was outstanding , soup with a full loaf of fresh baked bread ,chicken, lamb and organic vegetables . I couldn’t fault the venue at all the staff were excellent , the bar was well stocked and the wedding barn was so beautiful I would recommend it to anyone who was looking for somewhere different to get married. The wedding cake was actually a cheese cake and it looked fabulous.

An eye-catching bronze statue of the doctor and philanthropist Samuel Taylor Chadwick. Dating back to 1873, it stands proudly in front of the very impressive Bolton Town Hall. He practised in a surgery close by, and his statue is Grade II listed.
