What to do and see in Belgrade, Serbia: The Best Cultural Tours

October 17, 2021 Franklyn Hardiman

Belgrade's long and storied history is suggested by its architecture, which varies from Byzantine and Ottoman to neoclassic and romantic buildings in the older neighborhoods, and from Art Nouveau to brutalism and neo-Byzantine design in New Belgrade. The city's many theaters, museums, monuments and opera houses boast a deep and fissured cultural life while the beaches and rivers attract sunbathers, sports enthusiasts and partygoers on the popular floating river barges that serve as nightclubs.

We had a great time on our wine tour with beautiful wineries and beautiful wine. The tour is exactly as described and because we were traveling during this pandemic, we pretty much had most of these wineries to ourselves. The first stop was Despotika and a perfect start our day. The winery overlooks beautiful vineyards and scenery and we got 4 different types of wines. From here we went to a family house and had a wonderful lunch and also 4 glasses of wine to go with our meal. This is a true Serbian experience as you are in someone's actual house. From there we then went to a museum-like winery that gave us a sampling of wine. This use to be the King's old cellar and still has archives of old wine. A good stop and interesting to learn about. Our last stop was Aleksandrovic Winery which feels like a high-end winery that also overlooks beautiful vineyards. Here we sat until about sunset with delicious wine! We had a great time, and our guide Andrija was great. Also got some photos of our trip which was a nice surprise!! Overall highly recommend.

Do you know the story of Romeo and Juliet or the Helen of Troy and Paris? Well, they are not the only love couple in the literature and history that should be known about. The Belgrade had its own share of romantic stories. Join me on the tour where you will hear some of the most interesting love stories of Belgrade. Though Belgrade and its old grey facades' seem to lack the romance of Paris or Venice you will be surprised to learn that it is quite the opposite. The city on the confluence of two great European rivers that sits on the border between East and West has a lot of secrets that just wait to be uncovered by you. We will take a walk by the beautiful buildings of the old town where I will tell you the juicy stories of loyalty, adultery and undying love.

I had such a fun tour with Sloba! First things: Because I was the only person on the tour, he was happy to move it by 30 minutes. Then, I asked if we could stop for burek and he was kind enough to go to a great burek shop near him, and bring a big piece to me (and it was delicious). He had packed for me yogurt and extra masks, which was very thoughtful. Sloba is super friendly, and I really felt like I was hanging out with a friend. This was a wonderful tour combining cycling with Belgrade history and visits to its parks. Sloba is SO passionate about his city's history, and when he tells stories, Belgrade's history comes alive. I had a great time with him, cycling and learning about Belgrade. Thanks, Sloba! See you next time.
