Bandipur (Devanagari बन्दीपुर) is a hilltop settlement and a municipality in Tanahun District, (Gandaki Zone) of Nepal. This municipality was established on 18 May 2014 by merging with existing Dharampani and Bandipur VDCs. Because of its preserved, old time cultural atmosphere, Bandipur has increasingly been coming to the attention of tourism. At the time of the 2011 Nepal census it had a population of total (Bandipur and Dharampani) 15591 people living in 3750 individual households.

The Thani Mai Hindu Temple sits on top of a hill & can be reached via many irregular stone steps that climb up from point about 5 minutes walk from Bandipur Bazaar.
It probably takes about 30 minutes to complete the climb.
From the top enjoy superb views of the Himalayan Range, including Annapurna range, Daulagairi, Manasulu & more. Also views down to Bandipur town & away to the Marsyangdi river.

So we went there in September and were a little disappointed. Temple was under renovation. Although it's been a while since the massive 2015 earthquake but still renovation is incomplete. As similar to other temples in Nepal, this one was also crowded and we had to stay in queue for a long time.
We took cable car to get there and enjoyed this part of journey than other.

Several choices available to access this cave: firstly, a long descent from Bandipur involving many slippery stone paviours, passing through trees & ferns. You can then return by the same route or continue on down to the small settlement of Bimalnagar & return to Bandipur by taxi or maybe bus?
Alternatively you can just walk up from Bimalnagar.
There are hand rails in places but it IS very slippery. I was wearing good hiking shoes & still took a few skids.
Not expensive to enter cave, you go with guide who has torch but bring a good one of your own- my head torch was pretty useless.
Although it was the dry season it was pretty slippy inside & in places there are ropes to help you manoeuvre.
Some excellent formations to admire to which names have been given in accordance with their assumed likeness.
On occasion of my visit their was a sadhu in residence. Also at the entrance was what I can only describe as a photo opportunity with a man dressed accordingly.

Nepal's first roap way established by Austrian company for helpinng devotee of Maa Manakamna darshan. This cable car beautiful designed and fully automatic for saftey of passengers. Ticket are little bit coastly rs 500 INR and rs 800 NPR. Can view amazing landscape of river and hills from cable car.

We got to the lovely village of Bandipur just as a huge storm broke. We sought shelter in this beautiful old cafe/restaurant. We only had beers and gin whilst we waited for the storm to subside. The owner was welcoming and from looking at other tables, the food looked pretty good.
Don't know how they were affected by the earthquake.

The temple has an aura to it. I believe this temple rarely opens and there is a sword inside the temple. Sword means Khadga apparently.
Bandipur itself is very scenic and you can see the Himalayas on a clear day. We did see some interesting wildlife - didn't realize what they were, apparently they are the red pandas ! Lucky us !
