What to do and see in Azores, Portugal: The Best Horseback Riding Tours

July 1, 2021 Rosalyn Ihle

The nine islands that make up the Azores are in fact the peaks of some of the world's tallest mountains, reaching from deep beneath the Atlantic. The once-uninhabited, volcanic archipelago now hosts thousands of tourists every year who flock to the islands for sun, sand and verdant mountain scenery. From the beaches of Praia da Vitoria to the bustling marina of Horta, to the bubbling volcanic ground "ovens" of Furnas, these islands offer unparalleled--and unusual--adventures to discover.

I really can't say enough great things about Equitur! Lara was the guide for a private ride for my daughter and I. Rodrigo was there to help at the start and end as well. The farm was clean, well kept and their operation very much felt like a small business run by Lara and Rodrigo that are very passionate about horses. My daughter is a very experienced rider, but I am not very experienced and it has been 4-5 years since I've ridden at all. We normally ride English and have done riding tours around the US (Western riding, unfortunately) and in Iceland and Mexico and by far, this one was the best! The horses were in excellent shape, very well trained and good spirits. Much nicer than any previous tour we've taken. They were more like well behaved private horses. We wanted to do a landmark tour, but only a farm ride was available on short notice, however, it was perfect. We rode on roads, in town, gravel between farms, up and down hills and through the forest. Lara was very knowledgeable about the history and vegetation of the island and she knew exactly how to keep the perfect balance of nature and the fun of riding. We got to trot and even canter as well and it was the most fun I've ever had on a horse. I'm sure my daughter wished we could have been jumping, but she had a blast as well and didn't feel like I was holding us back. I would wholeheartedly give Equitur my highest recommendation for both beginner and experienced riders! It is the best!

If you want to see the island in a different way this is it. Horse back riding and enjoying the stunning views at the same time, it couldn't get any better! We took a 2h tour and our guide was Bruno. He was really kind and sweet and had a great knowledge about the plants, flowers, trees and places that we saw and visited on the tour. The horses are healthy and well taken care of and best of all, they have horses for all type of riders????
