Valle d'Aosta, Italy Food Guide: 10 Mediterranean food Must-Eat Restaurants & Street Food Stalls in Aosta

August 24, 2019 Randal Brittian

Find out what Mediterranean restaurants to try in Aosta. Aosta (Italian: [aˈɔsta] ( listen); French: Aoste [ɔst]; Arpitan: Aoûta; Latin: Augústa Prætṓrĭa Salassṓrum) is the principal city of Aosta Valley, a bilingual region in the Italian Alps, 110 km (68 mi) north-northwest of Turin. It is situated near the Italian entrance of the Mont Blanc Tunnel, at the confluence of the Buthier and the Dora Baltea, and at the junction of the Great and Little St. Bernard routes. Aosta is not the capital of the province, because Aosta Valley is the only Italian region not divided into provinces. Provincial administrative functions are instead shared by the region and the communes.

Great restaurant. Drove for two hours from France to have some classic Italian food. Ordered 2 pizzas, salad, fries, coffee and drinks and it was less than €40. Delicious and fast. Would highly recommend

We stopped by for a late lunch, pappardelle and fettuccine with red wine and water. Quick and friendly service and very good pasta. Nice location almost at the start of the cobble stone pedestrian street.

Il Girasole

First off we went with a local business couple who made the reservations and know the owners and the restaurant. Girasole advertises that it specializes in meat dishes so I had expected something nice. Only when the waiter served my three dinner companions did he tell me that my grilled filet wasn't coming because the chef didn't like the look of the meat. Got to wonder why they waited to tell me just as my friends were being served. OK a quick look at the mixed grill plates two of my dinner companions had been served and told it would take minutes to prepare. Only when my friends had finished eating 20 minutes later did I get my mixed grill and only when I stopped the waiter and asked about it. To be frank my mixed grill plate was uninspiring, the chicken was oily, the sausages not that tasty but the small grilled filet was nice. Saturday night, the place was busy, the anti pasta was traditional cold cuts and cheese so that was OK. I should add that when we walked in and saw a table being served fresh fish we were told that was the last of it. No apologies for the inconvenience. Don't think I'll return for a long time.

I have used TA for years and never felt the need to review a restaurant. The discrepancy between the service we received and the relatively good reports on TA have moved me to make comment. If you want to be received by surly and rude waiters, overcharged, stuck upstairs in a room void of atmosphere, come out smelling like a Turkish smoke house (the waiters used the upstairs room for their breaks) then this is the place for you. Admittedly the pizzas were good, but nothing could make up for the way we were treated.

Hostaria del Calvino

We walked 1km northwest from our Hotel Le Pageot to Restaurant Moderno, but finding it closed, searched for another. 100 meters north, we discovered a suitable 12 Euro Menu del Giorno next to a customer filled patio. Inside at the bar, the 6 tables were also filled, but 2 men departed and we were happy to sit, watching 4 waitresses scurrying about delivering meals while the owner helped and tallied payments. She came over to interpret the Italian menu(in French) and we chose; Pasta e fagioli, Filetto de gallinella alla calvino, apple pie, and a half litre of house rosado. The food was served hot, well presented, tasted delicious, and even though the facility was swamped with locals, we were never neglected. I used the clean restroom before walking downstairs to see the cava that extended way in the back, and discovered the pizza chef. I then climbed to the upstairs to see the large dining room, discovering the kitchen(and all the different desserts available that day.)The locals know about this place, and we were lucky to experience this memorable meal that totaled a reasonable 29 Euros.

Had a delightful lunch here yesterday. The food was very good as was the service. You need to make a reservation as the place is popular & busy. The menu is in three languages & the waiters speak multiple languages if you do not speak Italian. We'd return here the next time in Aosta. Worth a visit for lunch.

Arrived here on the first evening of our holiday after a somewhat fraught journey. Therefore such a pleasure to receive such a warm, friendly, relaxing welcome at Sapori, located right across the street from our B&B, Le Reve Charmant.Service was attentive and unfussy. The standard and quality of the food was excellent. The primi pasta was top quality, with the pistachio crème brulee dessert a first and to die for!Reasonably priced and highly recommended.

This was a delight. If you speak Italian as badly as I do, then the owner compensates with excellent English and makes you feel at home.3 of us had different starters..solo good.Main plates were equally delightful. Our hard to please son declared the pasta the best he has ever had.Wonderful, and very filling. And then, stomachs very full, came dessert. 3 different ones tested and demolished. Again, excellent.A huge thank you for an experience we will enjoy for a long time.
