This Inn is sat in the most beautiful countryside in the middle of Dartmoor. It was perfect for our walking holiday. Room and beds were very comfortable. We had our favourite table saved for us each evening which was a lovely touch. Breakfast was nicely cooked though I would have liked yogurt and fruit to be on offer ideally. The owners and staff were very friendly and we appreciated the biscuits and extra milks for our flask! All in all a great value and welcoming Inn.

There are obviously conflicting reports of this pub, so I suppose your experience depends upon the day and time you visit. Sadly, we were unlucky and this is, without question, one of the worst places we have ever visited.Let's start with the positives - this is an attractive-looking pub, both outside and inside. It has lots of quirky character and promises to be a great dining experience. There is a varied menu, with an extensive Specials board. It also appeared that the "grumpy landlord and landlady" mentioned in other reports were absent, and their place was taken by very young staff, possibly teenagers, both behind the bar and in the kitchen.Unfortunately, this is where the positives come to an abrupt halt. We visited at lunch time and asked the young person behind the bar if they were still serving food. He appeared to find it difficult to converse with the "aliens" who had just landed, but finally said that we would have to wait. Not a problem - good food is always worth a wait! We then ordered our drinks and were asked if we wanted a glass, then (looking in horror at the thought), what kind of glass - not normally an issue we usually encounter in a pub, but not a problem.We ordered our food and waited patiently, even though, by this time, we were the only people in the pub. Unfortunately, my steak baguette was definitely not worth the wait. It was impossible to cut the steak, let alone eat it, and the onions were almost raw. I left almost everything. My husband's scampi smelt and tasted very greasy. When we went to pay, we were not asked if we had enjoyed our meal, nor did the young person behind the bar say thank you when we paid, let alone reply to our "goodbye"! Based on this experience, we would recommend eating elsewhere!

Coming into Lustleigh is a nightmare from the wrong direction. Satnav accuracy is dubious.In The Cleave we had a warm welcome, I assume from the owner/landlord and his wife.Varied menu and decent quality. Prices very reasonable and good wine and beers.Would definitely recommend making the effort.

Stayed in East Devon for our wedding anniversary. Having rented a cottage in North Bovey on the green a couple of years ago, we were intrigued to watch the renovation of this pub following a fire in 2017.We promised ourselves that when we returned weâd have a meal here.The setting is wonderful albeit compromised by challenging parking when the pub is busy.The decor felt rather clinical, as based on the village setting, youâd imagine old timber, warm and cosy; the stark grey panelling belies a rather modern ambience not really in keeping with the olde worlde surroundings.We ordered mushroom soup & crispy pig cheeks for starters - the soup was a winner but sadly the combination of homemade piccalilli and battered pulled pork didnât really taste of much.Main course was Dartmoor steak (med rare) was more (med well done), again not hugely flavoursome. My wife opted for the mussels which unfortunately were very gritty; sadly mussels is one of her favourite dishes.The waitress kindly quickly exchanged this for sea bass which had been destined for another table, so top marks for a swift recovery.Always ask myself would I come again.... Hmm not sure.

A good looking restaurant but nothing on the shelves so felt slightly unfinished. My selection of fish dish was surprisingly good. The burger however was not homemade and was of inferior quality both meat patty and bun. Waiting staff unsure of themselves. Would be worth knowing why there is a frame picture of Agatha Christie there when tourists ask about it!Thank you for your honest review. We appreciate your feedback. We are in the process of training our new waiting staff and they will be up to speed with the whole hotel soon!The Agatha Christie portrait is presented in our hotel reception along with her two of her books because she stayed her many years ago and in fact wrote some of her books here. A pub that is used by locals and visitors alike is usually good and the Carpenters Arms is no exception. There is a really nice friendly atmosphere. The beer is good. The food is good , well priced and very popular. Biscuits for the dog too. A good find Our priority is to look after our locals. In the dark cold months they keep us busy. Visitors are a bonus for us and we treat them with the same kindness and respect we give our locals. Thank you for 5 stars

We were staying in a nearby hotel and were out for a walk with the dog. We stopped in here for a drink. There is a restaurant and bar both of which looked nice and inviting. If we were here for longer we would definitely give the food a try. As it was we had some drinks and had a pleasant time sitting in the beer garden across the road. A nice girl came out and gave the dog a treat but didnât seem interested in enforcing their stated âdogs on leadsâ policy. There were a couple of wee yappie mongrels running loose much to everyoneâ annoyance but no one seemed to care.The drinks were on the pricey side which might explain why it was quiet on an otherwise busy with people, warm, sunny Saturday afternoon.Thanks for the review. Glad you stopped by and were able to enjoy our lovely garden on what has lately been a rare sunny afternoon. We do ask for dogs to be kept on leads in the garden and our drinks are very fairly priced we believe for location & quality. We hope you will stop by again if you are in the area.

stopped off here as we often do after a ride on our bikes. arrived at 5.20 arriving at the bar and asking if the food was still available.the barman was very polite and said he would check with the kitchen.I popped off to the toilet and on my return, my partner was saying, âthats, not your fault, weâll try the other bar you have recommendedâ she also declined his asking if we would like a drink before we left. returning to our bikes she told me what she had overheard from the kitchen. the barman pointed out we had actually arrived in time, but the chef didn't want to serve us, the barman's request for maybe a sandwich (10 mins? ) was answered with â just tell them weâve run out of everythingâIâm glad he doesn't work for me. the barman was very polite and did his best to accommodate us, top young man.

We popped in for lunch after walking on Dartmoor on a local recommendation. This old pub is full of character and charm. We hadnât booked and even though we arrived at 12pm on a Thursday we only just managed to squeeze in - booking essential! The menu has plenty of choice and there were lots of options we wanted to try. We went for the Rugglestone platter which was very generous and came with warm bread that tasted homemade, proper ham, the Innâs own chutney and excellent cheeses. Washed down with one of the many local ciders on offer, this was delicious.
