We had an overnight stay in Underberg and needed a place to have dinner. The Grind was a wonderful surprise. It has an great vibe and seems to be a popular eating place in this town. The staff were extremely efficient and friendly and the pizza we had were excellent.
What a great place for the weary traveller to have a meal and a glass of good wine

Very cosy and nice restaurant, super friendly staff and delicious food. Unfortunately, not every day open for dinner. We were lucky to get there Saturday night. Totally recommend it!

Our lovely thatch rondavel restaurant has a country feel with a panoramic view over the waterfall that flows into our trout dam. Our signature dishes include the Fillet Ripini and Pollo Pizza on Pasta with our very own home made pasta. We also serve Rainbow Trout. Although some of our dishes have an Italian influence we also have some South African favourites like oxtail, lamb shank and of course steaks. We also have fish and vegetarian options.

Went for dinner on 24 December. Inside is old and dingy. Food was okay and the waiter was very pleasant, but we would not recommend it. However, with our BAD experience on leaving, we cannot stress enough, how this is a place TO BE AVOIDED!! This is what happened - take the time to read to the end!
My husband gave his credit card for the payment, the machine scrunched up the slip and he told the waiter not to worry to print another one as he would get an sms on his phone. As we were slowly driving out (very dark in the parking area), we heard someone shouting and on stopping to see who it was, realised it was the waiter who had served us. He told us that he had made a big mistake and only billed us R50 on the CC machine instead of R500. We had not realised this as yet, as my husband had not checked his phone and we did not get a slip. So we reversed the car in order to stop and pay the R450, by which time a lady came towards the car with the CC machine (possibly she was the manager?). She apologised for the inconvenience and we were about to sort it out, when another man came to the car and asked what was going on. He was aggressive from the start, did not greet us at all and then asked the lady with the CC machine "were they trying to leave without paying". We tried to explain to him what had happened, but he was not interested in listening to us or the lady with the CC machine, who said THEY had made the mistake and we weren't 'running away'. He carried on standing there in a very accusatory manner, no apology and clearly still sure we were criminals. So we said to him that his attitude was uncalled for and that it was a simple mistake which was being sorted. He became even more aggressive and rude and told us to get off of the property. He said this a few times and when we asked him why he thought it was okay to speak to a client like that, who had in fact not done anything wrong, he got even more aggressive and rude (if it was possible). Apparently he is the 'general manager of the complex' and clearly he thinks he has 'arrived' and has a very important job, but sadly, he has no idea how to treat customers.
By all means, come and check why we started driving away, then reversed the car and why 2 staff members were standing at the car, but once you know the story, an APOLOGY on inconveniencing the customer (like the waiter and the manager lady gave) would have been called for, not screaming at us and ordering us to leave and never come back! Wow!
We were sad for the waiter, as we have no doubt that John (the rude 'general manager'), would've tried to fire him for this.
We emailed the owner as per the website, but apparently she had sold the place at the beginning of December. We sent our complaint to the 2 email addresses of the new owners, but they have not bothered to respond. Obviously our experience is not important to them.
John does not deserve to have a job and The Old Hatchery does not deserve to have ANY customers.

We normally get an excellent meal here and most in our party were very happy. We sat under the trees and the weather was stunning. My meal was not what I expected and I wish restaurants would indicate items on the menu that have chilies in them. Service was very friendly and helpful. I thought lunch was good value for money

We stopped for coffee. The restaurant dining room is sterile, lacking character or decor, the coffee was not great. The waffle was good, but my Mrs did not enjoy her scone. The kitchen extractor is clearly audible and noisy. Feels more like a take away style place where you hit and run your meal...

We stopped for breakfast. Had pies. Husband had their signature beef and Guinness pie. I had steak and kidney. Both had been microwaved to warm- so pastry was soggy. My pastry was raw. Situated close to the dam, this restaurant has plenty of Seating inside and outside. Also has a very cosy and attractive pub.Caters for breakfast and light lunches, which are good.Great views of the Drakensberg.
Always make a point of visiting this restaurant, every time we spend time at Fairways, our timeshare resort.

We ate the 300g Filet with Madagascar Pepper Sauce here and that was the best steak i had in South Africa so far. So juicy, great sauce wirh it, just perfect and really reasonable prices! Highly recommend this place if you are looking for good food!
