Keur Saloum

A good value for money hotel

Reviewed By globetrotter2482

The hotels location was great as it is on the water, and its lay out is quite nice too. The pool definitely looks bigger on the pictures than in reality. The rooms are nothing fancy, quite simple and a bit rundown, but clean and comfy with functioning AC's. Most of the staff was friendly, however the food was really not great (and we are NOT picky eaters ) Food: Breakfeast was ok and consisted of toast and jams with a boiled egg. The Proposed menus of the day are very average and your only choice (besides a sandwich). It also seemed like every thing was over fried/over cooked and there was a lack of freshness in their ingredients . The food was not very kid friendly either, so if you have toddlers come prepared.

PURE ELEGANCE IN THE MANGROVES

Reviewed By travelwithcarlo

Located in the Saloum national park elevated above the banks of delta where the mangroves grow as far as the eye can see. This little piece of paradise is a world away from the hustle & bustle of the towns & cities of west Africa. Bird songs are your alarm, nature is your entertainment & relaxation is baked into your experience. ROOM We stayed in room 45, a delta view lodge that had uninterrupted epic views of the delta & mangroves. Made with traditional materials such as a thatched roof that blends in with the local style, each lodge is separated giving a sense of privacy. Inside you will a super comfy bed with luxurious linen sheets, air conditioning, huge shower, tv, wifi & desk along with patio doors that open onto your private terrace overlooking the delta. AREAS At the heart of the hotel is the pool & garden area. This truly beautiful serene area with baobab trees, palms & a myriad of flora takes your breath away. Bright yellow weaver birds have their homes in the trees above, while butterflies hop from flower to flower, it truly is a nature lovers utopia. Further on you’ll find the restaurant & bar area. This open air space is where your meals & drinks are served with views over the delta. Lounging on the outdoor sofa’s watching the sunset before dinner became a nightly ritual. GASTRONOMY The room comes with breakfast but you have the option to add full or half board meals for 15k - 20K CFA. -Breakfast; fresh coffee & juice served with pastries as a side coupled with your choice of mains from omelette to granola. -Lunch & Dinner; a variety of dishes that cater towards both meat eaters & vegetarians alike. I always opted for the sublime fresh fish. ACTIVITIES They have gone above & beyond in terms of what activities are on offer here. So many to mention but we loved the safari & walking with lions, the evening delta boat trip into the mangroves, finishing at a bird nesting island site. Fishing, market & local village tours can also be arranged. There are plenty of free activities too from kayaking & paddle boards to games for the kids you’ll never get bored here. LOCATION The Unesco listed Saloum national park is home to this wonderful hotel. The bio reserve has vast amounts of flora & fauna with over 76,000-hectares. A 4 hour drive from Dakar or less than an hour from the Gambia border with the hotel transfer service you’ll arrive to paradise in no time at all.

The five star reviews are all fully justified! Celine and Gilles are a truly generous couple who are devoted to their customers, and it shows in all the little details that make this place so special. You start the day with an excellent breakfast overlooking a pleasant garden with enough trees to provide shade and moisture in the dry season. Pretty little birds dart around the food that Gilles puts out and enjoy the bowls of water, while guests eat their fill of tasty bread, home made jams, local honey, and good coffee, with a daily bonus such as pancakes. At the end of the garden is a large shaded pergola, ideal for reading. The cuisine here is exceptional, thanks to Celine. Not only is the food delicious, but great care is taken in its presentation, so that meals are akin to dining in an excellent restaurant, except that they are taken outside and served without pretension. While Celine is "front of house", so to speak, Gilles works tirelessly in the background to ensure that excursions operate on time and give maximum satisfaction. Before coming here I had told Gilles that we enjoyed bird-watching, and prior to our arrival he had examined Google Earth and made reconnaissance visits to likely areas with Doudou, his bird guide, in order to add new places to his portfolio of birding sites. How's that for devotion to duty?! We made a number of non-birding excursions, including an evening kayak trip round the local waterways and a simple lunch on a nearby island with two of the inhabitants as well as swimming in the tidal waters. Although I am not a fisherman, I did express the wish to catch a fish and Gilles was remarkably patient in making a long trip to where even an incompetent such as myself would net something decent, and I did! Meals are taken in common on a large table at Keur Niaye, which was part of the attraction for us. We met many interesting people, French, Belgians, Italians and Americans. Some evenings before dinner we could hear Celine playing Chopin on the piano, and playing extremely well. The rooms are of a good size, bedding is comfortable and each room has air conditioning, though the surrounding trees meant that we only used the AC once, and then only for ten minutes before going to bed. At night the ceiling fan was perfectly adequate. Our lasting memory will be the friendliness and generosity of Celine and Gilles, which we felt influenced in a positive way, the behavior of all the guests. Oh, and the staff all seemed really happy and at ease. I think you'll understand why our stay was extended from 7 to 16 nights AND: we'll be back!

My new favorite place to stay in Toubacouta!

Reviewed By Lucysworldtravels

Mariamacounda is a wonderful small hotel, the rooms/bathrooms are impeecably clean with lots of hot water and good air conditioning. Beds have mosquito netting, and most rooms have a front porch. The garden is lovely and the pool is very refreshing on hot days. The food was also very good and we loved all the staff...I'm already looking forward to going back!

Africa Strike Lodge

Unfriendly and overpriced

Reviewed By phillipking

I really hated this place. The service was super unfriendly and incompetent. The hotel itself is reasonably nice and the swimming pool was well maintained and a relief on a roasting hot afternoon. We were tired and didn't want to go out for dinner after a long hot travel day so we made the mistake of eating at the hotel without asking the price. We were charged 10 euros, a ridiculously high price in Senegal, for a dreadful meal of what appeared to be canned corn, macaroni with a few shrimp, and a bruised banana for dessert. We had reserved the room for two nights but in the morning the manager told us he made a mistake and we had to clear out by 11:30. There was no apology for the inconvenience, just more of the same airlines and unfriendliness.

Top.

Auberge Helaba

A great base for exploring the Sine Saloum

Reviewed By Mike J

My wife and I and our three kids (14, 12, and 8) stayed at Auberge Helaba along with another couple. This campement is clean and colorful. Owned and operated by two brothers, Pape and Mamadou were friendly and eager to be of assistance. They were always nearby if we needed something, but careful to stay out of way and allow us to enjoy our visit. The auberge has four cabins. Two cabins accommodate 4 people with two rooms each with a double bed and sharing a bathroom. One cabin accommodates 2 people with one double bed, and the fourth accommodates 3 people with 1 double and 1 single bed. Each cabin has its own bathroom with shower. The rooms have been recently re-done with tile floors and showers. Each room in each cabin has air conditioning at no extra cost. (This is unique for this area. Many of the campements have both A/C cabins and non-A/C cabins at different rates. The stated price is usually for the non-A/C cabin, make sure you ask.) Pape and Mamadou can arrange excursions into the Sine Saloum delta or to the Fathala reserve. We did the Lion Walk at Fathala (see separate review) and then took a sunset boat ride through the delta (80,000 fcfa or $160). It was an amazing experience. We explored some of the narrow inlets in the delta, visited the "Island of Shells," watched the dozens of species of birds come in to nest, and finally visited a traditional Senegalese fishing village. Before we left, we had arranged dinner with the on-site chef at the auberege. The table was set upon our return. We had several minutes to wash up and then dinner was served. We had a western-style salad, chicken with onion sauce, french fries, and fresh mango for desert all for only 4000 fcfa per person (about $8). I've lived in Senegal for over a year and it was by far the best local meal I've eaten. The next morning the men went on a 6 hour fishing expedition for 50,000 fcfa ($100). The guide brought the poles and tackle, all we had to do was show up. We caught two barracuda (1 - 8 lb. and 1 - 40 lb.!). As part of the agreement, we gave half to our guide and kept the other half for ourselves. While the men fished, the women swam and lounged by the pool. The pool was clean and great for kids. The depth dropped slowly from ankle deep to 5 ft. The water was very warm, a bit of a drawback but common for Senegal. Our only mistake was not having the chef make lunch for us. We departed as soon as the men returned from fishing, but we should have enjoyed their food one more time. The prices were very affordable at 25,000 fcfa ($50) for the double cabin and 46,000 ($92) for the quad cabin. I only have two complaints. The beds are traditional African beds which means they are very hard. I don't sleep very well on them, but they are extremely common. The beds were in good shape and the bedding was clean. All beds had mosquito nets. The other problem was an infestation of some type of nuisance bug I could not identify (similar to an earwig). They don't bite, but they were everywhere. Mamadou did come in and spray and sweep them out once, but they could not be contained. All in all, we really enjoyed our trip to this unique part of Senegal. I highly recommend Auberge Helaba and recommend you eat as many meals there as possible.
