Top 9 Things to do in Umkomaas, South Africa

February 20, 2018 Carley Gatson

Umkomaas, a small coastal town on the subtropical south coast of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa was formed when a harbour was built in 1861 to export sugar. The town rests beside the mouth of the navigable uMkhomazi River, also known as the Mkhomazi or Umkomaas. With the successful dredging of Durban harbour's sandbar and arrival of the railway, like Port Shepstone, the harbour fell into disuse, but the town came to life.

My girlfriend and I spent a few days in Umkomaas diving with ScubaCo. They were absolutely fantastic! Tam and Dean were knowledgeable and accommodating and the dive masters/instructors were thorough in their briefings. Dean had to cancel our last dive due to bad weather at the launch and I appreciated that he didn't just send us out for crap diving in dangerous conditions. Equipment was brand new looking and in good working order. Please do yourself a favor and book with ScubaCo, you will get great value and Aliwal Shoal is just beautiful! Thanks for everything you guys!

Baited shark diving. Very professional and well run outfit. As its up to mother nature to provide the show the attractions can vary. On our dive the conditions were near perfect underwater except for the current flowing inshore instead of out. Took about 20mins for the first black tip to arrive and ended up with around 13. One tiger (3m) did show up and stayed for the duration of the dive, and was easily the highlight. Would have been nice to see more and did hear one of the DM's mention the previous day they had 3, plus duskies, and even a Zambezi. I guess on that info I can feel a bit unlucky but overall I was hugely impressed and can highly recommend seeing these graceful creatures up close and personal.

Not the longest course in the world but it has its own challenges. Lots of hills and sloping fairways make the course quite difficult for non-pros.
Some superb views, nice palm tree vegetation, vervet monkeys, coastal setting ... overall a very pleasant day out.
Avoid rainy season though cos the course can get waterlogged.

Just a couple of kilometres inland from Umkomaas is WOW (World of Wings) and it really was a WOW experience going up in a Microlight Aircraft and enjoying flying like it must have been in the beginning in a very open cockpit. The pilot Noel went out of his way to ensure that the flight was not only fun but safe as well. For a different perpective of Umkomaas and surrounds I can really recogment this flight.
