Kimberley Mine Museum

Restored buildings at this historic site include a pub, a smoke shop and the De Beers family home. The mine itself is an astonishing crater from which over 22 million tons of earth has been removed by hand.

Visited with family on Sunday afternoon. As this was peak season, it was fairly full. The tickets are reasonably priced and information on hand is detailed. One needs to spend almost a day to really extract all the details. However the guided tour that provides the history of the area is most useful - the tour starts off with an interesting movie, then an underground visit and thereafter a visit to the big hole, before proceeding to a timeline of events that occurred in the diamond history. Very interesting and definite must see during a visit to Kimberly. The place is wel, managed and organized.

Kalahari-Oranje Museum

I was disappointed in the Kalahari Orange Museum, apparently the only museum in Upington. Inside was a Shambles with alot of unlabelled miss matched junk. Although there were 3 Martini Henry doppies and a canon projectile in one of the cabinets. The wagons outside, degrading in the open air, breaks my heart as valuable treasures are being destroyed. Entrance was R30 per person and clearly this money does not go to the upkeep of this museum. I wish I had not visited here as I left angry and extremely disappointed.

The only information you will find on the Railway Museum is the name on a few signboards dotted about town. Well, go out of your way to find it, you will definitely enjoy the museum. It is a haven of Sout African Railways history and memorabilia. It is well maintained and has a plethora of most interesting and interactive displays. The kids absolutely loved it and had to be dragged out. The cut-away section of a real locomotive is amazing and such fun for kids and adults alike. There is lovely railway poetry on the walls and fascinating old books and ledgers. A wide range of wonderful historical exhibits and information. Definitely a must see for Railways buffs and anyone who has ever been fascinated by trains and train travel.
