Avoid the shops/harbour area at disembarking and re-embarking times and you will also not get caught up in the hundreds of queuing cruise passengers and tens of buses they use for day trips.
If you get out of gerainger and onto the water or the hills around you lose sight of the large cruise ships that rock each day, then you just cannot beat it. The only good thing about the cruise ships is they give perspective to the magnificent size of the fjord. Wow! Highly recommend a fjord cruise as well as the walk up alongside the little waterfall to the centre/museum about the area and fjords.
We had a car and the drives in and out of Gerainger are a little hairy in terms of hair pin bends and elevation but consequently you get stunningly beautiful views.

Our excursion tour bus departed from the village and began the ascent up Eagle Road to the glacier lake. Along the way, we stopped at "Sky Walk" viewing platform and then up through the switchback style curving road. The scenery was pure eye candy and the glacier lake (called thus because the snow never permanently melts) was chilly and pretty barren. Waterfalls pour down all around and that just never gets tiring.
Gloriously sunny weather made this trip all the more memorable.

If you are not particular fan of hiking or have some mobility issues, this one is for you. A very nice waterfall in a "civilized" version (which to some might be a disadvantage as well). I would suggest pointing your initial steps from Geiranger port if you plan to hike - you end up just by the Norsk Fjordsenter, being a natural starting point for many hike routes.

We were driving up north into Geiranger and thought we should stop here for photos. It's a well-constructed lookout point - equipped with restrooms, recycling bins, benches and a walkway to few other viewpoints. Parking is available but can be limited if there's a large crowd.
On a good day, it's probably the perfect spot to photograph Geiranger town in the valley. The view is stunning - and if you're daring enough, there's a secret spot accessible behind the restrooms where you can get a daredevil shot of yourself at the cliff. Unless you're walking up to the viewpoint (or to the secret spot), there's no need to be in your walking/hiking shoes, a pair of comfortable shoes will do. Be ready with your jacket as it can be windy sometimes.
A good place to stop by if you've been doing a long drive. It's also a good place to sit back and enjoy the view with a simple meal. However, be prepared as you won't be able to have the place to your own. There are always bus loads of people stopping to share the view with you!

We passed this on the ferry which goes up the fyord to Geiranger. The trip was made more interesting by the onboard commentary. The Waterfall, which is made up of seven smaller cataracts, is known as the seven sisters. On the opposite side is a bottle like shape said to represent a young man the sisters would like to meet.

Just did this hike some days ago and believe this hike will give you unforgettable views and experiences of both Geiranger fjord views, culture and history of our Norwegian heritage. It is most likely best to take the shuttle boat to Skagehola, "climb" up to Skageflå fjord farm, then continue up to Homlongsætra farm and descend on the nice trail along the edge down to Homlong and Geiranger again. The opposite way will give you a steep descent and a more exposed experience and may not be suitable for those with a fear of heights. Most exposed places are wired or fenced. Wear good shoes, don't depart from the main trail, use common sence and you will be fine...and have a unforgettable memory for life.

We were hesitant about going to this museum and actually only did so because we mistakenly thought it was part of an entrance fee to see the adjacent Waterfalls and observation decks. What a great surprise--the exhibits were excellent, detailing life along the fjords. There were some very clever depictions of local life, which we thoroughly enjoyed. I usually yawn tolerating these small museums, but this one was exceptional. Do not miss it during your visit to Geiranger!
