Spent the evening in Chur before heading off on the Bernina Express. Pleasantly surprised walking around the old town, it was very clean and the old buildings maintained well.

Chur-Brambruesch

Brambruesch in summertime: The cable car whisks you from the centre of Chur directly up to the high plateau of Brambruesch, where you are greeted by glorious Alpine summer meadows, beautiful flora and awesome panoramic views. In summer, you can enjoy wonderful hikes, cosy restaurants and thrilling bikeboard downhill runs, as well as the Alpine Bike Park with its downhill trails for mountain bikers. Also ideal for group excursions! Brambruesch in wintertime: From the city centre directly to a winter sports area - in Switzerland, that is only possible in Chur. With the aerial cableway, ski lift and chairlift you reach 2'200m above sea level and 20km of natural snow pistes and cosy mountain restaurants, complete with sun terraces, for bon vivants. In addition, there is a 6 km-long toboggan run, a winter hiking circuit trail and perfect terrain for snowshoe trekking. Equipment and courses available at the AIS Sports School.

We got the cable car up to Brambruesch late morning from Chur and if staying at a local hotel, may be entitled to 25% off with voucher- no harm asking from the hotel. The journey up is in 2 parts with changeover in the middle; covering probably 20 mins in total. Once at the top, you can either walk or catch the local “bus” to where the ski slopes are and the ski school. For first timers, we hired skis for CHF35 each and no time limit given, although 3 hours later, all exhausted- we returned our skis. Fun and a few thrills & spills but don’t think I’ll ever be a Molly Bloom. Was the highlight of our visit to Chur, given the season. Didn’t try out the restaurants although were told that the views were quite spectacular. Perhaps next time!

Obere Gasse

Reviewed By YTCHENG - Hong Kong, China

Obere Gasse was only part of the old town of Chur. It was very relaxing and enjoyable to stroll around the area. The streets in the area were narrow and it would be a strange experience for travelers in meandering through these streets with shops and houses in between. It just made you felt that you were walking in the cobble streets in the past good old days. Highly recommended.

Kornplatz (Corn Square)

This square is older than its name; until the 17th century it was still known as Klosterplatz. Then the adjoining monastery was closed and a corn granary set up in the church. With the departure of the monks, the old name for the square also disappeared. The name Kornplatz (Corn Square) has remained to this day – in spite of the fact that the once stringently controlled corn trade was liberalised in 1840 and the corn granary closed down. While the square served as a site for various markets right into the last century, these days it is an important intersection between the sleepy Old Town and the livelier modern district.
