Byodoin Temple

Temple near Kyoto; famous statue of seated Buudha by 11th-century sculptor, Jocho.

This temple is an excellent half day's visit from Kyoto. As it's on the JR Nara line, it can be easily combined with the Fushimi Inari shrine, we stopped there on the way back from Uji and had plenty of time to see both. There are some beautiful cherry trees and wisteria in the grounds, and on a sunny day the reflections of the temple in the water must be stunning. We visited on a Saturday afternoon, and although there were crowds of tourists, the traditional tea room was quiet and the matcha green tea, served hot or chilled, is definitely worth trying! Nearby there are lots of matcha souvenir shops and more places to enjoy traditional green tea, also ice cream sprinkled with matcha powder, enjoy!!

Uji River

Reviewed By WeiLynn - George Town, Malaysia

This beautiful river runs through the township of Uji – famed for its green tea – which is about a 30 minute JR train ride away from Kyoto Station. We certainly wished we had more time to explore its surroundings. Half a day was not enough for us! We were there on a perfect crisp autumn morning, when the Japanese maples were at their peak, displaying a riot of intense colours. Here’s how we enjoyed our time there: - We parked ourselves on one of the few benches along the Uji River, somewhere along the tree-lined stretch closes to Omotesando Street, just before the first bridge to the small island -- & enjoyed our take-away breakfast under the maple trees. - We enjoyed strolling along both sides of the Uji River, crossing bridges & taking in the views of old buildings & maple trees lining the riverbank. - We particularly loved the walk up the vibrantly colourful tunnel of maple trees to the Koshoji Temple. While I had read somewhere that this was a favourite fall foliage spot for avid photographers, I was pleasantly surprised that we had the place almost all to ourselves, on a weekday morning, before 9am. - We had fun participating in a tea lesson & shopping for green tea in one of the many long established tea shops along the nearby Omotesando old street. - We enjoyed tasting green tea flavored food & all things matcha including green tea soba, green tea jelly & matcha ice-cream. Really, on hindsight, we should have spent the night in Uji too!
