We stopped in after asking one of the locals where we can get something light! The place is small and the soba is really favorable and made to order, the dashi (dipping soup) was light and not too overpowering! Soba is always a welcome easy to eat meal, with lots of great buckwheat flavor! Don't be shy about trying it!

Fantastic Bakery with many varieties of rustic breads, usually found only in Europe. Chiabattas, Long pointed end loafs with chiabatta-like crust and inside, also small, one-serving loafs including all kinds of breads, with various stuffings, croissants, too many delicious bakery goods to describe. It is one of those places where a shopper would like to buy one of everything, except for the limits of appetite, and the fact that these kinds of artisinal breads and croissants are best when absolutely fresh. Itohkyuemon is the best place to eat when visiting Uji. You can come here for a full meal or just for dessert. The non-desert position of the menu is limited; you can get hot or cold matcha soba noodles, which are tasty. There are lots of desserts, including large parfaits and all sorts of other matcha sweets.
This place gets very crowded so go early or be prepared to wait. Most of the staff don't speak English (we were the only non-Japanese speakers there when we visited) but they will bring you an English menu with pictures that you can point at to order.
In addition to the cafe, there is a shopping area here where you can buy everything from hojicha cheesecake to high end sencha. We bought some tea here and it's excellent, but you can buy cheaper and still very high quality tea in some of the shops near Byodo In Temple.
If you take the Keihan Uji Line to Uji, you turn left (and do not cross the river) to find Itokyuemon, which will be on the left side of the street. Look for the large plastic matcha parfait out front. (This place is in the opposite direction from Byodo In Temple and all the other tea stores; you will turn right and cross the river when you go to visit them.) Itohyuemon is open from 10am to 6pm daily.
Please note there is a branch of Itohkyuemon near Byodo In Temple, but it does not have a cafe.

Excellent experience of drinking the most delicious Uji green tea (not a tea ceremony, just delicious tea), the matcha was really excellent, very creamy with a very fresh taste. The sencha was also highly recommended, especially due to the interesting re-steeping process through which we managed to get around 5 cups from one (approx 5g amount of tea leaves). The process is very interesting, involving starting with water of around 60C then building up towards 80C for the later extractions, with each cup comes a completely different flavour, the first had a strong umami taste from the theanine which in later extractions was replaced by a more bitter flavour from the catechin. The staff I was served by in the shop had a real love of tea and took great pleasure in explaining things.

The place is very close to the Keihan Uji station, we went there at 5 in the evening and there wasn't much people inside, actually, it was no one except us, so the restaurant was really quite and comfortable. It has excellent view over the riverside, the serving speed was fast as there were no more other people. Their menu has pretty bad photos of their own food, but they turned out taste really good, like Japanese food usually get excellent presentation but rather normal taste, but here their food taste and look great at the same time.
We went passed Nakamura Tokichi Honten which was much more crowded than Tsuen, I would recommend people to try out desert here if they enjoy better environment, it's the place where you can relax in the home of green tea.

This matcha cafe cum shop is located on the way to Mimuroto-ji temple. It was highly recommended by our japanese hairstylist in Singapore, whose Grandad stays at Uji. He says this IS the best teashop. I completely agree with him. When we were there at 11am, the small 20-plus seated restaurant was already filled. I don't mind getting fat on the Matcha parfait, Matcha jelly and green tea flavoured sweets and cake. Matcha heaven !

We were planning to go to another place, which turned out to be closed. We made a reservation to this place instead, after Reading the reviews. When we arrived, we were deciding between the super bento box vs a matcha tasting menu. Even though the latter is 1500 Yen more expensive per person, it was completely worth it. There were 8 courses and each one was fantastically made. Each one was done with matcha and looked green. Extremely creative. I highly recommend it.

We have tried the green tea ice cream from Surugaya on our way back to Uji JR station. This should be the 5th ice cream cone during our half day trip in Uji. The taste of green tea ice cream cone here was delicious and price reasonable.
