Cafe Kantary Rayong

Reviewed By David B - Rayong, Thailand

With its white cane tables and chairs and hanging baskets of ferns, Cafe Kantary has a delightfully light and breezy feel to it.
Fortunately the food lives up to initial impressions and expectations.
I had an Hokkaido Sashimi Salad, which comprised mixed lettuce leaves with generous slices of salmon, tuna and octopus, with a top dressing of Japanese seaweed and caviar, finished with a sesame seed oil and rice wine dressing.
I washed it down with a tall glass of German Weihenstephan beer.
Together the bill came to a modest Baht 430.

Thung Na Ta Yai

Reviewed By David B - Rayong, Thailand

Thung Na Ta Yai is a rustic-style restaurant in the town of Ban Khai, about 20 km from Rayong City. It literally translates as :Grandma's Rice Field".
It is furnished with tables and benches made from recycled wood from old ox carts, giving the restaurant a rustic feel.
The menu is a delight for real foodies, giving you the opportunity to journey to boundaries of Thai home-style cooking.
Try the spicy and hot chicken soup, made with home grown chickens; the salted chicken wings, the fiery hot prawns in chili, the raw prawns marinated in hot Thai herbs and spices, or the pork, beef or chicken larp, which again is fiery hot with a tangy fresh mint after taste.
Grandma's Rice Field is open for lunch and dinner.
If you are not a local this restaurant can be hard to find. Google "krua-thung-na-ta-yai Rayong" and you will go to the "Lost in Rayong" site. This contains a map and a search engine that will tell you how to get to the restaurant from wherever you may be

Ran Bieng Kieng Restaurant

Reviewed By David B - Rayong, Thailand

Ran Bieng Kieng Restaurant is strictly for aficionados of Thai food, not your normal tourist who thinks Thai food starts with Tom Yang Gung (spicy prawn soup) and ends with Khao Pat (fried rice).
It serves authentic Thai food and some of it is volcanically hot and spicy.
We started with some chicken good with green peppers, ginger and other spices, followed by a pork larp, which was spicy, but well balanced with fresh mint leaves.
We also had grilled pork neck with a dipping sauce, a deep fried sea bass in a chili and garlic sauce, and some crispy fried pork with a mashed snake bean and tomato chili salad.
Ran Bieng Kieng is set in rice padi, a delightful setting for a delicious Thai dinner, especially at sunset.

Ban Chan Restaurant

Reviewed By David B - Rayong, Thailand

Ban Chan, which means "My House" in Thai, is a smart and stylish restaurant that opened in Ban Khai two months ago.
The restaurant is tastefully and stylishly designed, with clean modern lines. The tables are polished wood and the chairs are upholstered. The tableware is matching white plates, bowls and serving dishes, which is a pleasant change from so many Thai restaurants which have a mismatched collection of plastic plates and bowls. We had bought along our own bottle of wine and much to my surprise the waiter produced to large red wine goblets for us.
But best of all is the food. It is sensational, authentic Thai, with some western dishes thrown in for good measure.
The servings are relatively small and there were six of us, so we decided to explore the menu - which is in Thai, but there are 60 postage stamp sized photographs to help you make a selection.
We started with two Thai salads, one pork based and one seafood based. They were spicy and tangy.
Next we had chicken in a sour and spicy soup and a sea bass in a red "jungle style" curry.
We had small chicken sausages wrapped in bacon and grilled, fried pork wontons, fried chicken wings and a plate of small fish crispy fried so you could eat the whole fish. All of these came with their own dipping sauces.
Out of nowhere the owner of the restaurant put a bowl of pork goulash on the table for us to try. I think he must have been experimenting in the kitchen and wanted to see what we thought. It was good, but a little on the sweet side for my taste.
With a bowl of rice, four bottles of Singha beer and two fruit shakes the total bill came to a very modest Baht 1,600.
This new restaurant deserves to succeed.

We stopped at Hang Out on our way back to Bangkok as we looked for a lunch place. And there couldn't have been a better choice. The owners are very friendly and helpful and their Fried Rice with Shrimp is by far one of the best we ever had in Thailand. Nice twist to but the shrimp in a crumb coating. During our dinner we watched them making their banana muffins you must take with you. Hang Out made our day and we hope to pass the place soon enjoying their great hospitality and mouth watering food. Excellent.

Jenjira Kung Ten

Reviewed By David B - Rayong, Thailand

Jenjira is a restaurant at Rayong's Dok Krai Reservoir, in the north of the province. Or rather it is at and "on" the reservoir, because rickety walkways extend over the water to stilted chalets sitting in the lake.
We visited on a Sunday, which proved to be a very busy day because this restaurant is obviously popular with the locals.
We had a plate of deep, crispy fried sheathe fish in garlic, some raw vegetables with an anchovy past dipping sauce, an a lemon grass salad with peanuts, plump prawns and salted duck egg.
Most unusual of all was a dish called "Dancing Prawns" and it was literally that. The live miniscule prawns had been tossed into a small fishbowl shaped bowl on top of finely chopped chilis, garlic, fresh mint leaves and other spices. A plate had been placed over the top of the fishbowl to stop the prawns leaping out. But that didn't stop the prawns jumping off our plates onto the table and into our laps when we spooned them out onto our plates. It was quite a challenge rounding them up, putting them back on the plate and tucking in. The dish was very spicy.
With rice and a bottle of Leo beer the bill was a modest Baht 640.
