Garden Route Trail

At Garden Route Trail we offer guided hiking and birding tours in the Garden Route and Karoo. Our flagship is a 5 day slackpacking trail between Wilderness and Brenton on Sea. On request we compile hiking tours between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth and in the Karoo. Our day walks can be focused as Fynbos, Afro-montane Forest, Dune Thicket and coastal walks.

We were a party of two families including four kids ages 5-10 years old, and we slackpacked with Mark and with the support of Amanda in October 2020. Hands down, amazing trip!! Though we have lived in South Africa for ten years, Mark brought us to gorgeous and varied places we wouldn't have found on our own. The kids were so enthralled with how he brought the flora and fauna to life that they didn't notice how many hours or kilometers they were walking. After we finished the trip, it was rather disappointing to revert to "ask google!", and we all missed Mark's guiding. We appreciated the style of accommodation each evening (comfortable parks self-catering lodges in stunning settings), and we also appreciated Mark and Amanda's cooking.

Amanda and her horses are amazing... she somehow knows exactly which horse will suit you. My horse kroon and my BF’s horse Victor were the perfect match for us. The trail she then took us on was beautiful it felt as though we were transported into another world. So tranquil in the lush forest just what we were looking for to end off or trip up the garden route... Thank you so much Amanda we will definitely be back.

Half Collared Kingfisher Trail

Reviewed By demburger - Klerksdorp, South Africa

Stunning scenery and beautiful views! A not-too—strenuous walk between the lush forest while you’re surrounded by crisp and clear bird songs. We opted for the longer walk, with a bit of a climb and decided to cross the river at the stepping stones instead of the pont. We were not disappointed, it was breathtaking and made the cool mountain pools and waterfall a very welcome and refreshing destination. We were spoilt with close up sightings of the elusive Knysna Loerie, the cherry on the cake! Beautifully maintained by people who are obviously passionate about this South African gem!

Kaaiman's River

Reviewed By LizzieCapeTown - Cape Town Central, South Africa

Situated between Wilderness and Vic Bay where you can simply go for lunch or rent a kayak. Always the highlight of our trip to the Wilderness. The trick is to get there early (before 9am at least) so that you can drive into the parking area at the bottom. When it gets full the gate is closed and you need to wait your turn. They don’t ask for payment but it’s nice to give the car guards a good tip because they do such a fabulous job. If you are lucky enough to get in, your car is safe for the entire day. We take our own inflatable dingy and pump it up in the parking area. Then it’s packed with our cooler bag, umbrella, lilo’s, towels etc. making sure there is enough space for ourselves of course. Aways such fun and it doesn’t matter what the weather is doing it will always be nice. Once on the river you can paddle to the main sandbank (beach) or go down stream where there are little spots to stop along the way. There is also a waterfall that you can paddle to if you’re in a kayak. I recommend the beach because it never gets crowded and you can go for walks to the river mouth. A lovely way to spend your day but be sure to take everything you will need for the day. No ablution blocks so please keep that in mind too.
