Top 9 Museums in Franschhoek, Western Cape

August 15, 2021 Roger Rusk

The village of Franschhoek (French Corner), tucked into the Cape Winelands of South Africa, is known as the country's food and wine capital. Galleries and antique shops fill the tree-lined streets, and vineyards established more than 300 years ago cascade over the hills just outside town. Local activities range from wine-tasting tours to trout fishing and hiking. The Huguenot Memorial Museum honors the town's early settlers, who fled religious persecution in France.

What an absolute privilege and honour to have met with this incredibly talented man as well as visit the inspiring Sénéchal-Senekal Art Gallery in Franschhoek and to top it all off to actually see behind the scenes in his art studio where all the magic happens. His passion and drive to impact this world and create a global awareness of the beauty of our planet transcends through every creation and artwork that he is inspired to paint. With a mission to create an awareness of creation and some of our very endangered species across the globe. I have been watching his journey for many years now and he is just such an inspiration to me and to so many. His transformation through the years has been phenomenal. Junaid always answers the clients brief with excellence and his business ethic is superb. His interaction with the animals he paints really brings them to life in his paintings. He actually physically interacts with many of them before painting them and so there is such an authenticity to his work. Not only is Junaid a gifted artist but he is the most generous loving and kind man and his truth is revealed through his art. He has generously donated many paintings to our Annual Auction for our NPO which has raised much needed funding that contributes towards enabling us to do the community outreach which we do in our Paarl valley. He also gives back to many wildlife organisations and the community around him. When next you visit the Franschhoek Valley be sure to pop into Junaid’s Sénéchal-Senekal Art Gallery, or go online to check out his work on jssartgallery.com it is an absolute must see. We are a family of five - three teens who have very different interests and we all really enjoyed the motor museum with the cherry on top - the president-booked drive around in two of the vintage cars.

We loved the art in this gallery and popped back multiple times during our time in Franschhoek. When we did make a purchase the staff were incredibly helpful in packaging up for air travel and I'm pleased to say it survived the journey with no problems!

Huguenot Memorial Museum

This museum displays the signature of every 1685 Huguenot settler.

We were very happily surprised and impressed by the Huguenot Museum. The historic artifacts in the one building were sweet and interesting, a great intro to the history of the settlement of the Wine Lands. The main part of the museum across the street was really interesting. Set up as more of a historical guide to Huguenot History, it was laid out to make it easy to invest just a little time and get a great grounding of the history of the Huguenots. The staff member there gave great insights in pointing out some key aspects, it was very much appreciated. What I also really liked was that they incorporated more contemporary quotes from African leaders (Mandela) and poets that were direct links from history to today. Lovely grounds, an important stop to round out a visit to Franschhoek. The Perfume Museum on the property was an interesting little aside.

We were fortunate enough to visit on a warm sunny day so we were able to sit outside for our wine tasting and enjoy the beautiful grounds and enjoy the incredible statues and pieces of sculpture. We had a cheese and charcuterie plate to share which was a good size and offered an excellent selection of different things. Wines were superb particularly the Chardonnay. Check out the toilets a work of art!
