Went to Tissa on business and on the was back visited the park. It was past 2 pm and not an ideal time for bird watching. However we were blessed to see many species such as storks, thick knees, snake birds, purple herons, bird eaters, parrots etc. It was a fun and fascinating experience. We even saw a lone elephant, few crocs, lots of monkeys and peacocks. It was a rough ride in some places but I thoroughly enjoyed it. We had a short stop on a cliff overlooking the sea and the view was gorgeous. We ended by going around the salt lake.

This Temple was The surprise of my Sri Lanka trip. I have seen many Buddhist temples in my life but this one beats them all. The temple dates from the 3rd century and was further developed during the centuries after. It contains some stunning wall and ceiling paintings dating to over 350 years ago. It's one of the few archaeological sites in Sri Lanka that are not overcrowded with tourists and if you are lucky you will be receive the special blessings of a monk in a short ceremony. The temple has been built on a 205 m high natural rock and you need to climb a 500 step stairway to reach the top. The stairway leads you to different platforms with in total 7 cave temples where you can relax so it's not that bad. You will have stunning views of the surrounding Mountains just behind the temple on top. Definitely worth to visit.

It is hard to consider the impact of the Tsunami on this area when you see a beach this beautiful. There are some remnants - boats thrown up beyond the beach, but you wouldn't know.
I was there midday, on Independence day, and it was still not crowded.
The waves mean it is not great for swimming/snorkelling, but they make it attractive and a "washing machine ride" for swimming!
There are numerous places to eat along the beach - so plenty of healthy competition.
Worth a visit.

Tangalle Lagoon & Kayak

We decided against going into the lagoon with the kayaking as it looked like a scrap what these wonderful little things go to die. There is some water buffalo, parrots and monkeys to see. Save your money and view these from the side and let them be.

Indika Art Gallery

Reviewed By Christine G - Cheddington, England, United Kingdom

Indika's Art Gallery is on the beach road (Madilla Road) near Tangalle. We were not sure what to expect since Indika paints in many styles and some of the paintings are aimed at the tourist market. However, we were delighted to find that his traditional paintings are exceptional. He is inspired by temple paintings such as those at Mulkirigala. He paints local scenes in that traditional style and they are beautifully and carefully executed.
Indika paints on canvas and on small wood panels. He can remove the canvas from its stretchers and roll it into a well packaged tube for easier transportation. His prices are very reasonable.
Indika also stocks well priced souvenirs and jewellery.
He speaks excellent English and comes across as a very genuine, decent person, as well as a very talented and committed artist.

Medilla Beach

Reviewed By sharpster08 - Woking, United Kingdom

We stayed near here for 3 nights in August, had superb weather and then huge beach was almost deserted. It's a classic palm fringed tropical stretch of coast, has a few low key beach bars and is a great place to relax for a few days. When we were there the sea was rough and extreme care should be taken in the sea....there are strong rip tides here and we had a serious near miss!! There are lagoons behind the beach as well which are great to sit and watch the birds or to hire a kayak. This part of the coast is a bout a 15 min tuk tuk ride east of Tangalle.

From the moment we saw the beach, we knew that we made the right choice by staying at Tangalle.
It's not as crowded as Mirissa or Galle. Clear light orange sand, light bluish green water and Strong waves make it perfect for a days relaxed outing.
Kids loved the water and the beach. There are few shacks where you can lay down, have drinks food and have fun.
