Badskloof Trail

Reviewed By Ghathers - Langebaan, South Africa

This fairly easy walk (I have done it with my 4 year old!) meanders through the kloof, surrounded by majestic cliffs. There are amazing rock formations, displays of flora, including a large variety of proteas, ericas, aloes, red-hot pokers, lilies and watsonias, as well as a rich bird life and many smaller animals to be found along the route. The trail, which is approximately 2,2 km long, connects the hot springs at Avalon, with Eyssenhuis / Ou Meul at Joubert Park and takes about an hour to walk. As this trail is part of the mountain reserve, any person who walks through the Badskloof, (or hikes any of the other trails), must be in possession of a valid Hiking Permit, which may be obtained from the Avalon Springs Reception Desk, the Tourism Office (023-614 2471) or the office at Joubert Park Nature Reserve. The entry fee is charged at the either end of the trail. The price of the permit for the Badskloof Trail is R40 per adult and R27 per child. This permit must be produced if requested by a municipal official or police officer.

Montagu Nature Garden

Reviewed By Ghathers - Langebaan, South Africa

I took my five year old for a hike over koppie on the Nature Reserve, and we were both enthralled by the vistas that Mother Nature provided. From the amazing array of flowers, to the variety of insects and birds, to the beautiful view towards Montagu in the west and Barrydale in the east. We hike here regularly, as it is conveniently situated near town and the peace and tranquility is perfect for some "father/son" bonding. The walk over the koppie and down the other side is relatively easy (Ouma did the walk about 2 weeks ago!) and the small dams nestled between lush lawns are perfect for a picnic. For the less energetic, there are myriad paths that crisscross the reserve at various levels. Entrance fee at present is R5 for adults and R2 for kids, which is paid through a slot in the building at the entrance. Well worth the visit, especially at this time of the year!

Leidam Bird Sanctuary

Lovely deck to sit on and view the birds feeding their chick and basically just living their life. Yes, it does smell a bit, but what would you expect from a heronry. The dam could do with a bit of a clean up. Worth a visit and will pop around again when back in town.
