The best prawns ?

Reviewed By ndifanjin

Probably the best prawns in Lilongwe. I have never been disappointed; Peri-Peri prawns always hits … highly priced but that’s prawns ?. I love sea food. The service on this particular day was also on point considering that we got there 9pm??

Safari Beach Lodge

Fantastic :)

Reviewed By rachelrobson

II couldn't recommend staying at the Safari Beach lodge more. The setting is idyllic and the staff are super friendly- going out of their way to ensure you have a good stay. The rooms are basic, however, you are not going there to stay inside your room- but instead you will be enjoying the stunning views from the property and the wildlife surrounding them (especially the monkeys!). There are a number of activities available too, we got a boat to lizard Island and you can do a guided hike. I thought the food was great too- one evening the staff organised a meal on the terrace for us overlooking the lake- such a special evening. I will remember this trip for years to come- thanks for such a memorable stay!

A last minute emergency mean I had to cut a visit to Malawi short, and make the long drive from Karonga in the north all the way to Lilongwe (about 10 hours) with a 4 hour stop in Mzuzu. When we arrived at about 7pm, our rooms were ready and waiting for us. We were welcomed by Maria, a very friendly and hospitable host. Rooms are spacious and clean, beds were comfortable. Air conditioning in the room was a nice treat after two weeks in the hot north. The shower was hot (almost too hot) but it was also nice to have after two weeks of cold bathing. The restaurant was not functioning, we were told, but it was fine, as the area has many restaurant close by offering take away and even delivery. Staff brought coffee to my room in the morning and offered to cook me breakfast. The grounds are beautiful and calming. The price for this stay ($90 overnight booking through expedia) was some $40 lower than other hotels available in the area based on my quick online search. I will certainly use Annie's again in my travel to and from Lilongwe.

Lakeside Hotel

Any closer, the hotel would be in the lake!

Reviewed By KnockieD

The staff, from the owner to the cleaner were very welcoming, friendly and hospitable. They not only attended to our every need, but wants even. We felt like masters of everything we surveyed! We were in one of the lakeside rooms. The room was spacious, clean and comfortable. It had working air conditioning and a ceiling fan as well. The ceiling fan, we assumed, was there for when there were power outage. The bedding was clean and as crisp as any we've encountered in topnotch hotels across the world. The bedding was changed daily as was the field of towels in the bath room. There was ample storage for clothes and gadgets. There was also working fridge in the room in which we cooled our illegal outside-bought fruit juices and the even more illegal booze! There were no mosquito net over the bed which initially had us worried. However, overnight, we soon realised that hotel staff had taught the local mosquitoes to give the hotel, and did their guests, a very wide berth indeed. Over the weekend we spent at the hotel, the bites we got had nothing to do with mosquitoes. But then, that's a different story for a different kind of website... Outside our room, were was a veranda the size of several houses. On that veranda was a dining table and a swing chair. Many a romantic moments were stolen over breakfast, lunch, dinner and the illegal drinks mentioned above. A couple of more romantic moments were enjoyed on the swing chair... The swimming pool was clean and well-maintained. There were comfortable lounging chairs, several tables and chairs around the swimming pools as elsewhere in the hotel grounds in front of the lake. The beach in front of the hotel was clean as was the foreshore waters which made for a relaxing swim. There was a useful outside shower just into the hotel perimeter from the lake. The restaurant was big and airy, with an upstairs dining area to take in the sunrise over the lake. The breakfast, which was a typical Malawian hotel/lodge affair: cereal eggs -cooked in several ways, chips, baked beans, toast with margarine, doughnut, tea and coffee, fruit, etc was adequate. Lunch and supper, however were a different matter. The charcoal grilled fresh chambo (fish) and chicken served with either nsima (cooked maize meal starchy polenta-like staple food) or chips (in some parts of the world fried potatoes are a delicacy!) and salad were amazing. There were also Indian-inspired dishes as the chef was of that heritage. We didn't sample the Indian cuisine. Whilst swimming in the lake, we bought some recently murdered fish from a local fisherman who was passing across the beach. We aimed cook the freshly dead fish over an open fire on the beach. However, the hotel's chef very kindly professionally prepped and charcoal grilled the fish into an amazing meal as mentioned above. He did not charge for his services. The chef also threw in portions of chips and salad for free. There were several activities offered by the hotel as paid, yet affordable extras. These included boating, parasailing, banana (tube) boating, etc. The boat pilot was a very friend and lovely chap, yet he was obviously safety-aware and conscious. There were a couple of improvements that would have made the visit a perfect 10. During our visit the hotel's Wi-Fi was down as it was being refurbished. The hotel's owner as well as the hotel's manager apologised for the inconvenience caused by the lack of connectivity. However, the hotel could have easily bought and provided patrons cheap internet bundles for less than 1% of the accommodation cost as a complement and a temporary solution. We had to cut our stay short by a day as so we could return to the capital city to do some essential work over the internet. Also, the shower in the bathroom could have been hotter. It was lukewarm at best. That said, we have stayed at about a dozen different hotels and lodges in Senga Bay, but Lakeside Hotel is one we'll surely revisit.

Africa House Malawi

Whether a tourist, business person or transit visitor, all come to appreciate the Africa House's tasteful and comfortable accommodation, warm hospitality and excellent collection of African arts and crafts. The lodge offers a range of different rooms, all en-suite, and a restaurant for residents. During many years of experience and travel throughout Africa, the owners collected traditional arts and crafts; this collection shows how traditional cultures make use of locally available materials. Whether the material that is used is wood, stone, beads, paint, metal, fabric or leather, African people continue to make powerful statements about their cultures and create an extraordinary and rich heritage of artistic expression. A stylish contemporary lodge has been created from a unique blend of African designs, furniture, fabrics and personal collectables. Each room is named after an African country, style or culture and decorated to reflect that. This and a work experience of just under 20 years in the tourism and hospitality industry have made Africa House Malawi a true destination with a difference.

Pleasant oasis outside the city centre

Beautiful setting, calm and green, nice ambience, friendly staff. A bit outside of town, but conveniently close to the airport and some offices. We stayed three nights and really enjoyed it. The restaurant prepared fresh and tasty food. Only the internet was not ideal - the free voucher finished rapidly.
