After a particularly poor experience last year, followed by a particularly positive experience also last year we decided to book a table for 15 people for Sunday lunch to celebrate a significant family birthday.I am so glad we did. Without using the usual cliches all I can say is that this was one of the best, if not THE best, Sunday lunch celebrations I have ever been part of.The team of staff led by a very professional young man (duty manager?) was extremely efficient, timely and very pleasant. The organisation of the staff members was very tight and well controlled. Food appeared, wine and drinks were replenished and plates removed quietly and without fuss. The plates of food arrived altogether which I thought was no mean feat for a table of 15 with a large range of meals from vegan to child to meat-eaters. All guests were very impressed with the standard and presentation of the food. I had probably the best salmon as a starter that I have ever had in my life. The roast beef as a main was cooked beautifully and I loved the presentation.Thank you to the whole team at Dean's Place and to the very talented chefs for turning this important day into a very memorable experience.I wholeheartedly recommend this restaurant. My wife and I will be returning as a couple shortly (and regularly).

What a fabulous place. The sun came out just as we arrived making the whole vineyard area and restaurant glow. The atmosphere was super and the staff were incredible all night, friendly and attentive. The taster menu was very good indeed, though the portions were small.

Wingrove House

You'll find the Wingrove House at the far end of the 'sleepy' village of Alfriston in the heart of the Sussex countryside. I say sleepy, but the village boasts 4 pubs that all look like they deserve investigating at some time in the future...The restaurant boasts a cosy terrace in front of the main glass doors, which, 'weather permitting', should provide an excellent 'al fresco' dining opportunity. The menu changes regularily and has a fair choice of dishes to suit most palates. What I should point out here, and this was confirmed to me by one of the chefs, practically all the ingredients used in the kitchen are sourced locally, with even the wine list graced by some locally produced wines. So bravo for that! This was a 7 person family a la carte dinner, and so not easy for any small kitchen with another 30 something diners to cope with, all ordering within 45 minutes of one another. But the delivery of the appetizers and afterwards the main course went off extremely well without any obvious delay. Only professional restaurant folk will understand what I'm saying here, but it was 'top notch service' from the guys in white. The food was well presented, well seasoned and proved to be delicious to the palate. The service was sufficiently descreet and efficient - just how it should be. Overall, it was a very pleasant experience and one to repeat in the not too distant future (maybe after checking out the four villlage pubs).

What on earth has happened to this once great pub? It has become seedy, dirty and thoroughly unpleasant. Avoid. Hi there!Thank you for your review, you're right, the pub was once great but unfortunately fell into a state of disrepair under the previous management. It's difficult to see a once great place fall upon such hard times but as the new business owners we are doing everything in our power to turn it back around! We have a very large refurbishment due to occur shortly, changes are coming! We please ask all our patrons to bear with us at this time, we are aware the decorations aren't pretty, the carpet is worn and things don't work but EVERYTHING is changing! New tables, new chairs, new toilets, the full works! We hope you return and give us a second chance. Thanks, Faye & Shane! :)

You need to book. Lovely atmosphere very friendly, polite and kind staff. Good fresh food. Great selection and good specials board. Small cosy restaurant. Good value. Only criticism is that some of the portion sizes are on the small side compared to other Italians.

If you are going to have two businesses, set up new accounts. Seems easy to hide behind one. Delicatessen may be doing well but their restaurant is flailing. Booking system poor. Menu too large. One waitress on, doing her best, but not sufficient. Our food was ok but nothing special. While we were in the restaurant we witnessed other diners sending their dishes back to the kitchen. No music, bland atmosphere. won't be returning.

We visited The Grumpy Chef following the recommendation of our host in Seaford. The atmosphere was buzzing on Saturday evening with the place nearly full, but service coped beautifully and was friendly and efficient. The menu is varied and interesting with plenty on offer for vegetarians, tempting salads, seafood, pasta dishes, steaks and much more. I was bowled over (pun intended) by my roasted tomato soup and the mussles were lovely (perhaps a tad too much cream). We also loved the aubergine salad and the wild mushroom arancini. Overall a perfect meal at a fraction of the price we would have paid in London for such quality food (and drinks have a very reasonable price tag too). Very Highly Recommended!
