Newfoundland Insectarium

The Newfoundland Insectarium is a museum of nature featuring insects and arthropods from around the world. It houses thousands of live and mounted specimens including a butterfly garden, glass beehive, and ant colony. It is located in Reidville, Newfoundland, just outside Deer Lake.

Never seen anything like it. They bring in cocoons which turn into butterflies then move them to a greenhouse where we can sit and watch them feed on flowers and glitter around. A huge bee hive along with all kinds of insects on pins and labeled from all over the world. Worth the stop.

Deer Lake Beach

Reviewed By Queenlisab - Winnipeg

I only found out about this little beach thru Facebook. There's parking at the location and you can walk the sandy beach. It's small...so don't expect something big. But to find a little spot like this in a small community, it was delightful.
The weather was cold and rainy while we were there so we didn't get to enjoy it as much as we'd like.
If you are coming from holiday inn in Deer Lake, turn right at the stop sign (don't know the name of the street) and then a little ways up the road you can turn left into the parking area. You can't miss it.

Cache Rapids Stable

Reviewed By GracieAllenEinstein - Morehead City, North Carolina

Kevin and Ruth manage the farm and they are lovely, knowledgeable people. Ask Kevin about his experience on the reality TV show "Mantracker". We went on a 3 hour trail ride on well maintained horses along the Cache River and through beautiful pasture land. No better way to see the local countryside. They have horses for all levels of riders. Located near Deer Lake, about about 50 K from Gros Morne National Park off route 430.
We may stop there again on our way back from "Viking Country." Loved every minute of it!

Sir Richards Squires Memorial Provincial Park

Went here with family to spend the day and see the salmon jumping. I heard about this location for watching salmon jumping, but it was much better than described. There were salmon jumping constantly and we did not have to wait anytime to see them. The location on the river was beautiful and very entertaining to watch. Well worth the drive and short walk down the trail to the river.
Note that there is gravel road for part of the drive to the park, but it was well maintained and almost as good as a paved road. It also had very little traffic.

The Viking Trail

Reviewed By David B - Saint-Lambert, Canada

The Viking Trail, Route 430, is a scenic drive in Western Newfoundland which starts at Deer lake and terminates at L'Anse Aux Meadows. My wife and I had completed a cross country road trip in August 2017 and I returned in September to drive the few scenic routes I had missed. The Viking Trail passes many scenic sights and villages such as Gros Morne National Park, Arches Provincial Park, Parsons Pond, Port aux Choix, the ferry to Labrador and St Anthony. The drive offers spectacular views comparable to Nova Scotia and British Columbia, good scenery and the opportunity to appreciate the local geology. The road is fairly well paved to St Barbe but gets a bit rough after that. It’s OK but reduced speed is suggested. The drive is approximately 1800 KM’s round trip so you should plan to find accommodation along the way. The Viking Trail will be appreciated by those interested in history, spectacular scenery, icebergs and whales, and by those who like driving. It will be less interesting for those who do not like driving isolated routes.
