Horrendous stay

Reviewed By janice c

I booked two nights but stayed only one as I couldn't handle how awful this place was. People may want to sleep, but before they do some might like to read. The lighting is horrible, with one non-working lamp. The room absolutely stank. The minor renovations were very few and very poorly done. Beds moved around like they were on roller skates. Mold, yes, mold, was in the refrigerator. Very noisy with people stomping on all the wood ramps and decking. When I returned the key, the man at the desk wanted to know why I was leaving. I told him, truthfully, everything, including the screaming children of another guest and the eternally meowing cat all night. He would not even refund the second night. So essentially, I was penalized for staying only night due to his horrible hotel. What a rip-off. If you have newly purchased a business, please make all renovations all at once so it is fresh and nice for the guests. You should be paying the guest to stay here. The best thing that could happen to this place would be for a big D-10 tracker to pull the whole thing down. It is a dump. Do not stay here.

Enchanted place

What a beautiful place, situated between a tidal river and a long walkable beach. The rooms are comfortable and there are now luxurious cottages. The restaurant on-site is as good as any city restaurant. Knowledgeable and flexible hosts. It's a perfect spot from which to visit Haida Gwaii.

Eco-tourism at its Best-Tremendous Experience in Haida Gwaii

Reviewed By Gymrothwel

We were looking for a place where we could spend a special occasion and found Ocean House. Wow, it exceeded our expectations in all respects! We enjoyed the 4 night package that included plane and helicopter flights, comfortable accommodations and gourmet meals. Daily outings by boat to historic Haida village sites guided by young but very knowledgeable guides were most informative and educational about the history and culture of Haida Gwaii. These are a proud and artistic people who survived many difficulties and are now seeing their people, language and culture revived. The location is very remote and beautiful, while the weather was far better than we expected. The ocean, forests, and misty mountains combine to create a restful atmosphere. This is enhanced by the friendly, helpful and relaxed attitude of the excellent staff. Other highlights included kayaking in the inlet where we viewed bears, eagles and other wildlife, quality spa treatments; and listening to the drum beat and singing of Haida songs on many occasions. This trip is among the very best my wife and I have experienced in our 50 years together.

Worth more than one visit

Reviewed By rob d

We have now stayed at Cacilia's B&B twice - in 2011 and 2019. Cacilia is a fine host - a very interesting and generous person (she picked us up at the airport and drove us back to the ferry on the day we left). Her house is very comfortable, full of light, wood, interesting local art and artefacts, and spacious. Walk out of the house and you are on the beach in about 2 minutes - what's not to like about that? We look forward to or next visit to cacilia's and to the inspiring and enriching environment of Haida Gwaii.

OK at first, and then disappointment with staff actions and atttitude

2x on 2-week trip; 1st days OK surprised poor communication-front desk empty; guests had to use phone; Mgr Judy lived in trailer by lodge; staff often at picnic table deck by restaurant smoking. Left 10$ tip; on return next week 4 days Judy was unfriendly & rarely seen. No book/info sheet to explain lodge, cleaning time. Left noon 1 day told Judy was going out so cleaner could come-spoke to me as if I were crazy-housekeeping left; I replied did not know early hours only, was never told to me; her tone negative Next day PLEASE CLEAN ROOM sign on door but room not cleaned. Called Judy, who peppered me with questions: Did cleaner not see, misread sign; I answered questions looking her in eye & she asked me if was being sarcastic, I replied No, I am answering your questions. She then stormed off said she would have to clean. Judy tried to pick a fight with me & make me feel guilty; neither worked. Told her am just guest, do not know lodge operations. Not sure how I can know what in mind of cleaner in Sandspit. Seems a smokescreen for incompetence and mismgmt-disappointing for 1st-time visitor Quick cleaning Judy did poorly; coffee on floor & few supplies left. After told me: There, now is done, you happy (in negative tone I did not reply to) Guests confused, ask where staff, if restaurant ever opened, where breakfast, times. I think most sleep, go early tours, eat then bed without dealing with staff. Next trip not Northern Shores-price OK small basic room but staff not worth it.
