Associacao Peixe-Boi

If you are in the neighbourhood, this is an experience not to be missed. We stayed at a pousada 20 minutes from the association. This is like a cooperative of 40+ local people who invest in preservation and make their living from it. They limit the number of visitors to 70 a day to preserve the animals. When we were their, there were 35 manatees in the river. Our guide (Israel) was very knowledgeable (but spoke only Portuguese). It is not clear if they have guides who can speak English. The visit takes only one hour. You go on a jangada on the river without angine not to disturb the manatees. The trip into the mangrove itself is worth the visit even without spotting a manatee (we saw three). After the visit a lot of artisan shops are concentrated around the association location with interesting products, so worth to combine with the visit either before or after the tour. If you come by car, only a few parking sports in front, but you can drive behind where there is a lot of space. You will need your car to go the the place from which the actual tour starts along the river.
