Maidstone is a large, historically important town in Kent, England, of which it is the county town. The River Medway runs through the centre of the town, linking it with Rochester and the Thames Estuary. Historically, the river carried much of the town's trade as the centre of the agricultural county of Kent, known as the Garden of England. There is evidence of settlement in the area dating back before the Stone Age. The town, part of the borough of Maidstone, had a population of 107,627 people in 2011. There has been a shift in the town's economy since the Second World War away from heavy industry towards light industry and services.

Absolutely lovely all round, the staff are very polite friendly and knowledgeable, the gardens and grounds are beautiful, the castle is very interesting there's a visual display showing how it was and how it changed over the years, the falconry/bird show is very good then you can go face to face with the birds behind the maze, the children's play areas look good but we did not have kids with us so didn't go inside them, boat ride and train ride ok, less mobile folk will love the land train from car park to near the castle.

English Heritage Sutton Valence Castle

The old ruined castle has only the keep remaining but shows how it would have been in the 12th century. Not much parking but usually not very busy so its ok. Steep short climb to ruins.

Thurnham Castle

This castle is located at the top of the North Downs, just across from White Horse Country Park. A few information boards are dotted across the site which gives good educational value, and some good views can be seen from the top of the hill. Parking is just offsite, on the side of the road.
