Maidstone Food Guide: 10 Must-Eat Restaurants & Street Food Stalls in Maidstone

July 24, 2017 Frederic Celentano

Maidstone is a large, historically important town in Kent, England, of which it is the county town. The River Medway runs through the centre of the town, linking it with Rochester and the Thames Estuary. Historically, the river carried much of the town's trade as the centre of the agricultural county of Kent, known as the Garden of England. There is evidence of settlement in the area dating back before the Stone Age. The town, part of the borough of Maidstone, had a population of 107,627 people in 2011. There has been a shift in the town's economy since the Second World War away from heavy industry towards light industry and services.

Fish on the Green

Reviewed By Ashley A - Dubai, United Arab Emirates

I am visiting my Aunt and Uncle who are long time residents of Bearsted and regulars at this restaurant. My first time here for lunch this afternoon.
Just one vacant car parking space behind the two restaurants (Fish On the Green and Oak on the Green) which are adjacent to each other and overlooking Bearsted Green.
We had a prior reservation for three persons for 2 pm and were promptly ushered to our table close to the main entrance which was not ideal on a cold and rainy winter afternoon.
They offer an A La Carte menu as well as two course or three course Lunch Menus with the emphasis on sea food as expected ....
Fresh bread with olives and pickled gherkins is brought to the table while one peruses the menu.
All of us decided on a two course lunch menu. My Aunt had the Crispy Smoked Haddock fish cakes for a starter and The Roast Fillet of Hake for her mains. My Uncle had the same starter and The Grilled Fillet of Red Gurnard for his mains. I opted for the Soup of The Day for my starter and The Pan Fried Fillet of Bream for my mains. All mains came with a selection of sides and the general consensus was that our meal was really satisfying. I would however point out that we had a long wait for our mains.
We passed on wine and desserts although I tried a bottle of “Curious Brew” which is a lager - my first time trying this beer.
Service was generally efficient and courteous. The restaurant was almost packed out.

Gurkha

The very first Nepalese restaurant to be opened in the heart of Maidstone. We provide beautiful, tasty, amazing and authentic Nepalese cuisine alongside some Indian dishes. Since the opening year 2010, we have been able to serve and share our lovely cuisine and have been able to make permanent place in our lovely customer's heart who comes back asking for more. Very near to Maidstone east train station and within the town centre. Please do come and try our lovely food and we promise not to disappoint you. Namaste.

This is a lovely little restaurant- and when I say little, it is quite small inside so I do recommend to book in advance to secure a table. Due to its compactness, the tables are a little too close together for really private conversation, but let's be honest here you don't really go to this type of restaurant for the peace and tranquility do you?
They offer a seperate takeaway menu and they also now offer Delivery which is a bonus
The food is excellent, with some pretty unique dishes. Iyou like a really hot curry then try the Aakbarae Chicken - I like hot curries, but this dish is one of the hottest I've tried. Give it a go!
Polite service, and very efficient.
I like this restaurant, and I think with it being small and compact it actually adds to its charm and appeal- just remember to book first!

Our food is cooked fresh and express, so do take it into considerations when yo are 1 of 70-80 guests trying to eat on a Saturday night.

This is a nice little Italian restaurant on the South edge of the town centre. No parking outside so you'll have to walk a few minutes to get to the restaurant. Inside, the décor is bright and clean with lots of Italian pictures on the walls, and the tables are nicely spaced out so that you never feel cramped. The staff are all very friendly, attentive and polite. The food is really good authentic Italian, well presented and very tasty. We were are group of nearly 20 people on a busy Friday evening, and the staff did a good job of serving up each course promptly. Dinner was finished off nicely with a complimentary Limoncello. Altogether very good.

Frederic Cafe Bistro

Small independent cafe-bistro serving provincial French "peasant food" - This is not fine dining! Its loud, noisy and rustic.

Whilst visiting Maidstone we decided, at short notice, to go into the centre of Maidstone. Someone had recommended Frederic's and we were not disappointed in any way. We never booked and the place was busy but the waiter quickly found us a table for the 5 of us. The service was brilliant, it was very friendly and efficient. We ordered wine and 5 lunch time meals. After a little, but understandable wait, the wine arrived then the food. The white wine was chilled and the red wine was perfect. The food was good, hot and very well presented. With 2 bottles of decent wine, 5 good quality meals and then coffees, the total bill was around £85. It was very good value and we will defiantly go again next time we are here. Well worth a visit.

My partner booked a table for 2.30, we arrived around 10 minutes early, ordered a drink in the bar and were asked if we had a reservation for lunch, he then added the drinks to our tab which was exactly what we wanted.
Our waitresses were lovely and friendly, we ordered starters which were lovely.
I ordered the beef and my partner ordered Pork with crackling - we had a gorgeous side order of cauliflower cheese - yummy!!
we shared a desert (we really didn't need one but couldn't resist).
The atmosphere here was busy and warm and friendly.
Cannot wait for my next visit!!
One tip - make sure you are hungry the portions are very satisfying !!
