Speyer (German pronunciation: [ˈʃpaɪ̯ɐ], older spelling Speier, known as Spire in French and formerly as Spires in English) is a town in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, with approximately 50,000 inhabitants. Located beside the river Rhine, Speyer is 25 km (16 miles) south of Ludwigshafen and Mannheim. Founded by the Romans, it is one of Germany's oldest cities. Speyer is dominated by the Speyer Cathedral, a number of churches and the Altpörtel (old gate). In the cathedral, beneath the high altar, are the tombs of eight Holy Roman emperors and German kings.

Cute, quaint and cosy comes to mind, in describing this cellar restaurant. Stone walls and solid wooden furniture ooze character and charm. The cute âcat cornerâ adds the cherry to the cake. My comforting âhay roastâ (Heubraten), which is a slow-cooked beef, served with gravy and a side Spätzle and salad was tasty and melt-in-the mouth. My companions ordered a pan-fried poulard breast which was oh-so-pretty and pork steak, which they enjoyed. The extensive wine list featured a good local Pfälzisch selection, as well as the trusted and true imported full bodied reds. Our friendly waitress rounded off our dining experience. We chose the restaurant to entertain visitors from Australia due to its atmosphere and selection of local dishes and wines, and were simply satisfied.

This small Bar's speciality is to present different vineries from the Palatinae region in a certain rotation. That makes it so interesting to taste the best wines of the vineries without having to travel there. For only a few Euros more than you would pay directly at the vinery you can also buy a bottle of your favorite wine in the bar.Along with the high quality wines you can find a small but excellent menu with specialities of the region but also two variations of freshly made tasty Hamburgers and some Tapas as well.In the afternoon the WunderBar offers a very good coffee and a self made Red Wine Cake that is recommended by the author. After all a very comfortable place to stay and have some good hours there.
