Recently visited after hearing about the new menu and offers available. Some food was ok, nacho were awful, soggy and tasteless. Worst was the drinks prices, defo will be drinki bt tap water if i go back. Wine was so over priced compared with other local places. I would expect to pay £20 with a nice meal in glasgow. But way over priced considering the menu and decor. Kitchen paper on a roll on the table instead of paper towels, felt so cheap.

We booked a table as we saw that they advertised a Sunday roast. OMG, what a roast. We have the Trio of meat. Beef, Turkey and Pork Belly. The photos do not do it justice. We also got a big bowl of roasted vegetables and ordered a side of Cauliflower Cheese. Not that we were hungry afterwards but we had to order dessert. Sticky Toffee Pudding and Marmalade Bread and Butter Pudding. We WILL be back.

The Fox and Hounds

We were looking forward to our night out at “the Fox” it’s been a good few years since some of us had been and we had heard good things since It was taken over by The River Inn Over the moon that we had a round table! Always better for including everyone in the conversation when there’s a few of you, we were a group of 7. The staff were lovely, but the service was excruciatingly slow and there didn’t seem enough staff on. The glass of house red that one of our number ordered was vile! The others had a taste and reckoned it had been open too long, very vinegar like. Rather than make a fuss, our guest asked for a wine menu, to see what she could choose instead. No one came back with the menu, so we had to ask another member of staff for a wine list when our starters were being served, but then no one followed up on that, we had to wait until our starters were being cleared away before the glass of wine was able to be ordered. That was a disappointing start. The chicken parfait was really delicious, as were the macaroni croquettes however the scallops were charred on the outside- too hot a pan I would suggest- and this took away from the taste of the scallops, the little black pudding bon bons were tasty but the star of that plate was the pickled cauliflower, again most disappointing. I had told the member of staff with whom I reserved the table that we would have 2 vegans with us and he did assure me that there was plenty of choice for them on the menu. They chose a vegetable curry and a tofu burger as their main courses but were not really very enamoured with the food. The curry had two pieces of courgette and the rest was all peppers, which was not to our guests taste, no excuse for that guys! There is so much amazing veg around just now, that should have been outstanding! The burger was ok. The steak was ok. The Cullen Skink with Ham Hough was ok but really salty, the prawn pasta was really tasty as were the enchiladas but the chicken balmoral was really disappointing, served in a bowl and drowning in gravy! I possibly didn’t read the menu properly but I was expecting a whisky cream sauce, not gravy, credit where credit’s due though....the mashed potato was superb. Sweets not much better, roasted pineapple sounded fabulous, but it was tinned!!!!! Again no excuse for that. Our vegan was too suspicious of the caramel sauce to eat her “vegan” desert so another guest ate it. All in all for £200 it was very mediocre, and I was embarrassed by the vegan choices and the really slow service. Had this not been a celebration meal, I would most certainly have complained but we couldn’t have a fuss this evening. So I’m afraid we just won’t be back.
