Meaford is a small town on the southern shore of Georgian Bay. It's west of Thornbury and Collingwood, Ontario, and, between the downtown, its theatre and waterfront, it has a charm of its own. Part of that charm is the “Sail” restaurant at 108 North Sykes Street, which is at the west end of the downtown area.Sail used to be a popular fish-and-chips restaurant called Captain's Corner. We used to go there. Then the Captain's Corner name disappeared at that corner location and Sail started its voyage of serving people fish-and-chips and other menu items.Sail continues as a cosy place, with tables and chairs on one level, just inside a very large picture window at the front of the restaurant. There's a wood stove in the dining area and the kitchen area is tucked away, pretty much out of sight, behind the reception counter area.Four of us were going to see a Zac Brown tribute band called Chicken Fried at the beautiful Meaford hall, a refurbished theatre. We enjoyed Chicken Fried, but before that show we enjoyed our meals at Sail.I had called a week ahead of time to make a reservation for us. The fellow who answered the phone, named Ryan, assured me that I wouldn't need a reservation. When we entered Sail, I immediately asked for Ryan and confirmed that I had called. The reservation was not necessary, but the dining area did start to fill as we were eating our meals.A cheerful server, Denise, (Hey! It's a small town!) looked after our drinks and then our orders. She buzzed back to check on how we liked our dinners. We assured her that all was fine, including the wine one member of our group ordered.I had the Alaska whitefish, two pieces, with sweet potato fries. That was on special for $15.99. Others in our group enjoyed the same thing, or haddock with fries. We were all pleased with our dinners and the service. While there, we discovered that Ryan Follis, the owner, has at least four food-related ventures under his culinary apron. Sail restaurant is one enterprise. Sail restaurant and food truck is another. Just Like Home Cafe is an enterprise in nearby Owen Sound and Intimate Fare Catering “for the love of food” in Grey and Bruce counties is a fourth venture.Ryan wasn't shy in promoting his upcoming culinary Intimate Fare dinner series. He gave us sheets of paper on which are the details of upcoming special dinners, special five-course dinners on Thursday evenings through February 2019. Best to check with Sail for details, but I can assure you from looking at the Intimate Fare menus that these dinners (at $130.00 each event, per couple, plus applicable taxes) will be special. Special enough, I think, to consider the February 14th event as a Valentine's outing.Don't let the old-building-on-the-corner look fool you when it comes to Sail. It's clear that Sail restaurant is upping the level of culinary arts in Meaford and area and is more than a fish-and-chip shop. Although their fish-and-chips are worth the stop in Meaford. Earlier this week, Sail celebrated its second anniversary of serving customers at this downtown corner.Wow.. All I can Say is Wow!Thank you So much for your kind, wonderful, insightful review... We really do LOVE what We are doing here at SAIL, and Hope that each and every customer through Our door has a similar experience to yours.I will pass you kind review along to the team. They truly are the backbone of this establishment.Heart and Soul - "All In"I look forward to serving you again.Thank youRyan

Being from North Carolina, we wanted real poutine during our Canadian adventure. While we were camping at Craigleith Park, the locals told us to try “the chip truck by the car wash on the edge of town.” I’m so glad we drove there, everything was fresh and delicious. My husband had the rib special with fresh veggies and slaw and I had a burger that I will dream of. AND the poutine (hand cut fries with cheese curds, gravy, and malt vinegar) was the best I’ve ever had!

A dinner with friends on a Friday night, not too busy, we were able to be seated straight away.We ordered the Meaford Home Style burger ($16.00) cooked medium, which comes dressed with sauteed mushrooms, smoked cheddar, a house-made tomato jam on a sourdough bun. Served with fries.Burger arrives, cooked a fair bit beyond medium and its a monster. There is no WAY you're getting this in your mouth without wearing the tomato jam from now until Sunday. Cut in half, still a challenge. My bun had spent a few minutes too long under the broiler as it had been overcooked, then scraped off. I tossed it aside and went in with a knife and fork. The jam is tasty which is more than I could say for the burger. Beef is nice, but nothing special. Fries were underwhelming. Disappointed. My wife had the deep fried southern chicken ($14.00), expecting fried chicken, on the bone, but were served more like chicken fingers or tenders. These too had run out the clock on the cook time. Disappointing. Our big surprise was the wine - a glass of Cab-Merlot that was, well, warm. Quite warm.Beyond room-temp warm in fact. When we asked, our server admitted the wine had been stored right beside the coffee burner. Oops. It was moved, we heard ice being put in a bucket, but who stores the wine next to the coffee? The Red Door has a lot going for it, a cute decor in a small town with limited mid-priced eats. Fast and friendly service, loads of potential. Sadly, they missed the mark the night we were there. Two mains, one glass of wine was $44.07 taxes in.
