My feelings after visiting this site are mixed. The ruins are there to see, but the rather ugly fence surrounding it does not allow getting too close. Perhaps there is a safety issue? If so how are issues such as this dealt with? Apparently not the same as other ruins scattered across Scotland which are repaired and maintained in order to allow visitors to get up close.
Having a small amount of McDonald in me, I was looking forward to our visit and was not completel disappointed, but having a spouse with Campbell blood, and having visited Inverary a couple of years ago I feel that this site could be so much more!
Even the quality/ quantity of McDonald related merchandise in the gift shops is so limited.
I did find the museum very interesting and spent over 2 hours meandering through the exhibits.
As the rain was coming down at quite a rate, we were unable to spend much time outdoors so, sadly, did not see the Gardens.
Had a cup of coffee in the cafeteria which could also be so much more.
A bit of a let down after driving across Scotland to the Isle of Skye for the sole purpose of seeing Armadale.

Sound of Sleat Beach

This is a lovely beach and well worth the effort to find. The walk itself is a good distance - around 3km - with some steep parts and good views as yiou approach the beach. The beach itself is one of the best on Skye; golden sand and blue waters.

Dunscaith Castle

Reviewed By goanjock - The Stunning Highlands

Although mainly a ruin (and said to be the oldest castle standing in Skye dating back to 1300) it is still well worth getting off the beaten track for the atmosphere and views alone. The Castle played part of the history between the MacDonalds and the MacLeods (as well as the MacAskills who were allies of the MacLeods). There is also a story linking the Castle to Irish Mythology.

I attended a wedding on Loch Coruisk and the couple used Misty Isle Boat Trips to transport the wedding party. Misty Isle was kind, helpful, fun, and did a great job. They pointed out seals, birds, and deer to us and shared about the area. We had a wonderful time. Highly recommend.

Praban na Linne - The Gaelic Whiskies

Reviewed By 1959trip - Redondo Beach, California

During a tour of the Isle of Skye, we stopped at the Praban na Linne whisky shop. As whisky novices, we were not sure what to do or try. So, the very friendly, helpful representative guided us through sampling a number of Gaelic whiskies. It was a fun experience. We then purchased a very nice sample set of five 50 ml bottles of Gaelic whisky as a gift. We should have purchased more. Well worth a half an hour or so if you are in the area. There is also a pub nearby for a nice lunch.

Loch Coruisk

Loch Coruisk (Gaelic Coire Uisg/the 'Cauldron of Waters') is an inland fresh-water loch lying at the foot of the Black Cuillin on the Isle of Skye. Loch Coruisk is reputed to be the home of a water horse. After staying at Dunvegan Castle, Sir Walter Scott visited the Cuillin and Loch Coruisk in 1814 and described it thus: 'Rarely human eye has known A scene so stern as that dread lake, With its dark ledge of barren stone...' The loch is accessible by boat from Elgol or on foot from Sligachan (approximately 7-8 miles distance). It is also possible to walk from Elgol, but one section of the path known as the 'Bad Step' presents some potential difficulties for the nervous or inexperienced walker. The northern end of the loch is ringed by the Black Cuillin, often wreathed in cloud. From the southern end the Scavaig River, only a few hundred yards long, discharges into a sea loch, Loch Scavaig. The loch is nearly two miles long, but only about 400 yards wide.

went here to catch a boat to go on one of the tours, which were great and well worth the money. Elgol is a lovely place and the local people seemed very friendly and laid back. There is a little school on the harbour, still in use, and it must be a delight to attend there. Again another part of Skye to visit.

Bella Jane Boat Trips & AquaXplore

Bella Jane Boat Trips and AquaXplore are 2 types of boat trip from Elgol on the Isle of Skye. The Bella Jane trips go to Loch Coruisk, the Seal colony and the Cuillin Mountains. AquaXplore offers exhilarating wildlife and sightseeing trips to the Small Isles of Canna, Rum, Eigg and Soay with regular sightings of marine wildlife such as Dolphins, Minke Whales, Basking Sharks, Puffins, Sea Eagles. All trips offer a unique "no hype" wildlife guarantee so you can be confident in what you are told about what you will see.

Very enjoyable trip with friendly and knowledgeable crew and guides. Well organised and comfortable boats giving good views of the wildlife and amazing scenery. The wildlife is of course unpredictable so bear it in mind.....we saw porpoises, seals, red deer and (we think) a peregrine falcon. If the sea is slightly choppy bring waterproof trousers and coats as you could get wet if you choose to sit near the back, but it was all part of the fun!!

Camas Daraich

Reviewed By Scotlandmac - Glasgow, United Kingdom

It's about 3 miles to this beach and onto the Lighthouse from the Point of Sleat car park at Aird. We were about 3 hours all in, easily more if you linger. It's a winding car journey from Armadale but what views! Worth the drive alone. There's a decent track most of the way from a not too inspiring start point and it gets a bit boggy for a section as you cross over to the beach which has a very small signpost (or it did when we did this superb walk).OS map is useful.
The beach itself on a fine day is a slice of paradise with stunning views to the Mainland across a turquoise sea.A magnificent spot.
Carry on to the little Lighthouse itself where Rum and the Black Cuillin appear in the distance rising out of the sparkling blue ocean. www. walk highlands.co.uk website gives a detailed route.Quite a spot. This is one of Skye's most beautiful corners and shouldn't be missed and is a great alternative to the Mountains especially when you feel in need of some white sand and gently crashing surf, not plentiful on Skye.

Maggie Zerafa Ceramics

Reviewed By AdrianaBoscov - Niteroi, RJ

We were going to take the ferry from Armadale in the Isle of Skye to Mallaig in Scotland when we saw a little house with ceramics displayed at the window and a sign "Maggie Zerafa Ceramics". I am really glad we stopped because Maggie, an Australian eradicated in Scotland for more than 15 years, is a talented artist. Her ceramics are very unique and the jewelry she makes with little pieces of ceramics are astonishing. If you are planning to take the ferry in Armadale, instead of stopping at the little souvenir shop just in front of the veicules line, arrive 45 minutes earlier and stop at Maggie's just to take a look or to shop (it is located 200 meters before the ferry line). Just one detail: she does not take credit cards. Nothing ir perfect!

22 years of event promotion in South Skye ~ over 40 events each year.SEALL is the voluntary-run community Enterprise. Most of our events are at Sabhal Mr Ostaig, the Gaelic College but we also use Clan Donald Skye at Armadale, the Island's leading visitor centre. We promote an annual programme of Traditional Music, World Music, Jazz and Classical,Cèilidhs, Dances, Theatre and Children's Events.

This superb organisation is instrumental in bringing world class entertainment to one of the more remote rural areas of the country. The long-term commitment (22 years and counting) and efforts of the volunteers who share their passions of the arts with the rest of us is simply inspiring. Without their sterling efforts, Skye & Lochalsh would be a much, much duller place to live and visit. They manage to present a wonderfully varied programme of events with something for EVERY taste. They also manage to spring the odd incredible surprise! The recent Skye Swing & Jazz Festival being a perfect example. I cannot commend this organisation highly enough and wish them many more years of continued success.
