Millstatter See

Reviewed By Djurdjica_Remenar - Zagreb, Croatia

The weather was nice when we went on a boating trip at Millstatter See, for one hour (complete tour is 2 hour) and we enjoyed it. We boarded at Millstatt boat station. We left our car close to the boat station at the parking which was free of charge.
The ship arrived according to timetable. The staff of the boat were very helpful. We took coffie and it was good and with reasonable price. The trip was very nice and relaxing. The view from the boat to the Mountains is priceless. After it we took a short walk in the city park and old town. Very nice place for visit, I recommend it.

Bonsaimuseum

Reviewed By Qamer_Zia - Frankfurt, Germany

Our first close interaction with these passionately grown miniature trees. People working there are very friendly as we were received with a welcome and were given a 5 minutes introduction (language: English or German) to the art of Bonsai including history and prices etc. They have a good variety of Bonsai and it was lovely to see them all. There are some parking slots available in a small ground as soon as you leave the main road (its the backside of the museum) and probably 2-3 slots are available in front of the museum.

There are two pools for swimming, one with lanes for professional swimmers, another one for everyone else. Kids can enjoy themselves in a separate pool with a water slide and monkey bars. Around the pools are loungers for relaxing. Entrance fee is reasonable, a daily ticket for swimming is about 9 euros and for another 9 the sauna facilities can be used. But be aware that the sauna area is strictly nudist. A small bistro offers a variety of food, pizza, schnitzel, toasts but we had to wait more than one hour to get an available table.

Goldeck

Reviewed By Hendrik_NL - Rotterdam, The Netherlands

A spacious parking lot with free parking is attached to the base station of the Goldeck Cable Car. The ride with the Cable Car is for a fee; holders of the Kärnten Card get free admission. The Cable Car consists of two legs; halfway a transfer to the second leg is necessary. In our case the timing was perfect. The second car was waiting when we got out of the first car. At the summit a restaurant is included in the Cable Car station. Silence and clean air make this a good spot for a bit of meditative walking; however, it was a bit cloudy so spectacular views were not to be had that day. But the views from the Cable Car over the Drau Valley made up for that. To be recommended.

Castle Sommeregg

Medieval adventure restaurant, knights' meal for 10 persons and more, great medieval tournaments with medieval market for 3 weeks in August.

Reviewed By Kristina B - Mojstrana

I visited the sight with my family. The purpose of our visit was to see the knights performance. Although the narrator speaks only in German (I understand a few words) it was not difficult to understand the story. Knights on horses performed some stunning acts and alltogether it was a nice experience. In front of the arena there was a middle-age market, but there were not many interesting things to buy. We didn't go up to the castle itself. There is a torture museum.

Museum Fuer Volkskultur - Schloss Porcia

Reviewed By Hendrik_NL - Rotterdam, The Netherlands

Museum "Schloss Porcia" is an interesting museum, situated in the heritage building in the center of Spittat a/d Drau. Schloss Porcia was built in the 16th century for a wealthy family, the Salamanca-Ortenburg. In the 17th century the Porcia family took over the Castle and gave it the current name. Today, the museum of Folk Culture is situated in Porcia Castle. Parking the car is possible in the court of Porcia Castle (through the gate in the wall). Parking costs are € 2,50 for three hours, enough time for a visit. The exhibition is divided in several sections. The castle is built around a large hall, which is apparently used for artistic Performances. Firstly, you are decanted into a room onto a large map of Carinthia (actually satellite photos), where you can cover Carithia in a couple of steps. Further along the tour leads through several rooms, where different aspects of Carinthian life in the past centuries are exhibited. You will pass a school room, a shop and, as an interesting detail, a showcase, where the Austrian product "Matador" was shown. Matador is really "Meccano" in wood, instead of metal. A difficult stone staircase leads to the enormous attic, where a hodgepodge of stuff from Carinthia history is exhibited, sometimes together with a TV-screen with audiovisual explanation. This brings me to the main complaint about the museum: Most of the screens were malfunctioning or simply were on black. Museum "Schloss Porcia" is interesting, without the quality that makes it worth a detour. An entrance fee is levied; entrance is free with the Kärnten Card.

If you are in the neighborhood, you can visit the Torture Museum, in Sommereg Burg. The place contains the illustrative history of torture (from the middle age), with mannequins (scary!). They say it's the biggest torture museum from the central Europe. After the visit you can relax on the Terrace and eat a snack or drink a coffee and enjoy the view. At the entrance is also a souvenir shop.

The reason I love this place in the summer is the big Fountain and the food. The spaghetti is an all time personal favourite and the ice creams are fabulous. The prices are very reasonable and the shops all around are very well constructed. I love this area very much and can't wait to go there again!
