Easily done on a day trip from Sibiu, I would strongly recommend renting a car for the day - ideally from gorgeous Sibiu - and driving the highway. Renting a car for a day in Romania isn't expensive and you'll have so much more flexibility. It only takes an hour or so to get to the base of the highway from Sibiu, and the road the entire way is in fine condition, as is the highway itself. Split over two sides of a mountain range, the most spectacular section is the northern section - make sure you stop plenty of times on the way up, there are plenty of places where you can pull over to the side of the road and hop out to enjoy the views. At the top there are a few shops and a big parking area that is quite cheap. Spend an hour or two here exploring a picturesque glacial lake before continuing along through the tunnel and down the other side, less spectacular bit still incredible. Of course, tours are available from all major cities in the area if you prefer not to drive.

We came here for New Year's, and we didn't regret. Far from the crowded cities, and with such a beautiful Citadel, nicely decorated for the holidays, lots of places to buy hot wine, pies, local donuts, souvenirs, while you walk nicely around the old buildings of so different eras.
You will find relics and historical sites from the Roman Empire, Austrian type buildings, Romanian constructions, the Union Museum, and Union Hall.

This group of monasteries, painted both inside and outside, dating from 1400 to 1700, are unique. Few similar churches exist in the world (i.e. Sumela in Turkey) but the ones in Bucovina are very well preserved and deserve a travel

Along with Transfăgărășan highway, Transalpina road over the clouds (as i like to say) it's the most famous and highest road in Romania! It's maximum altitude being 2145 meters in Urdele Pass were you can stop to make some awesome photos near to the Mount Moharu - altitude 2337 m. The hole trip till Urdele Pass was an extraordinary scenery. I honestly recommended to all of those who seek for adrenaline and stunning views! Must see it!

Sucevita monastry was the largest we saw and much more 'fort' light on approach....the very high outer walls intimidating and clearly incredibly strong and thick!
The interior area inside the walls was very large and the church stunning. The exterior and interior frescos were amazing in detail, colour and quality. All sides had survived the weather... on other churches the north side was often very faded or gone all together. Again you were not allowed to take photos inside the church but for a very small fee you could take them outside.
We were so lucky as clerymen from Syria were visiting whilst we were there and they entered the church in a procession singing - really made the church come alive and not just be a place tourists visit!
Really recommend making the time to visit this (and the other monastries) in Bucovnia.
It was a delight to walk around in the Sunshine outside and wonderful to see the interior as well.

Okay here you want to Shell out thirty lei for pictures, sixty lei for the grand guided tour. For thirty lei you can tour the downstairs but the living is all upstairs. I had to come back for another tour because last year all I did was a walkthrough.

This is a very pleasant square. It is pretty much free from the modern signage that can ruin such an urban landscape. The dimensions of buildings to square are good and there is a good sense of open space and pleasant vernacular architecture enhances the beauty.
It snowed heavily while I was there and thus added to the sense of magic about the square.

Sighisoara is a magical medieval city. The historic centre is full of period buildings and wonderful atmosphere. The presence of the Vlad Dracula house adds to the mystery but the whole place is redolent with old world charm. The narrow streets and the scholar's stairs are all part of what could be a movie set of some tale of medieval Europe. Every part is oozing with history and is marvellously photogenic. It is one of those places to just sit and soak up the atmosphere.

This place surprised me. It is a memorial to the many victims of the communistic era. It is graphic and shows how the people were methodically imprisoned, tortured, and killed. First they did the intellectuals, then anyone suspected of being against the communists. Overall they must have killed millions. The museum is multi-floor but I could only take about 3/4 of it before I had to get out. The guide said we made it farther than most. Required viewing.

Church surrounded by round high fortified walls with holes to pour or fire through. Inside the walls are filled with rooms accessed by wooden steps and walkways it looks very attractive, painted white on dark wood. You can go up steps to enter inside the walls and look into some rooms. The church is worth a look in.
