Caledonia Peak

Reviewed By Carlos_H_Ismerio - Sao Paulo, SP

The Peak of Caledonia is located near the city of Nova Friburgo and stands 2680 meters from sea level.
Years ago, the peak was open to public visitation by foot. A great place to go camping overnight.
Then, due to its incredible height, Petrobras (Brazilian Oil Company) built a road to the high base of the mountain, ran electrical cables used the peak to install it first communication repeater for exclusive use. This was the begin of the end of a great place to visit.
Nowadays the peak of this mountain is the base for a number of radio communication towers serving military forces, TV stations, mobile/fixed telephone providers and Ham Radio repeaters.
Currently, you can drive a 4x4 pick up truck all the way to the base of the peak, but since it considered as national security area, access to the peak is no longer permitted to general public. The base of the peak is heavily guarded by armed men.
Recently I was inspecting one of the communication towers for a local TV station....Great view all around if you get authorization to access the peak.

Poco Feio

Reviewed By Mike B

This was our first stop after arriving in Lumiar as we were staying next to it. The first thing that bothered me was that they charged R$ 10,00 per person to enter, but I thought that maybe it was something special. Wrong!! It's nothing but a massive mud puddle with leaves and branches floating in the water. Gave us the creeps trying to swim in it. Plenty of other beautiful water spots to visit for free or less than this place!
