Mt. Shiude

Reviewed By Paul R - Brisbane

First of all, you should hire a car if you are planning on visiting Shikoku. The driving is easy as the roads are great and generally, the Japanese do not blow their horns or give you the fingers!!! The area is called the Shonai Peninsula and it is really worth driving around it. It's mainly coast road and you stumble on little fishing and small port villages. Drive up Route 232 all the way to the top of Mt Shiunde (Shiundeyama). There is a free car park and a further walk takes you to the outlook. Panoramic views of the Islands. There is a cafe also with floor to ceiling glass outlook!!! If you enjoy trail walking/hiking - there are many to do.

Iyadani-ji Temple

Reviewed By Lara N - Takamatsu, Japan

This temple is set in a forest at the top of a small mountain with nice views. There is a long staircase from the parking area, or you can pay 750 yen for a round-trip shuttle bus to the base of the temple complex. The hall dedicated to Kobo Daishi is carved out of the mountain and partly fills a cave. The main hall is at the top of a flight of uneven steps; take your time to enjoy the half-eroded carvings in the cliff along the way. The setting is very lovely and worth a special trip.

Motoyamaji temple

Reviewed By Lara N - Takamatsu, Japan

This little temple is nice, but not exceptionally noteworthy. There is a 5-story pagoda which is the main feature, but at the time of our visit, it was completely obscured with scaffolding due to renovations, so was not at all scenic. Certainly worth a visit if you are in the area, Motoyama-ji is probably not a place to go out of your way to visit unless you are doing the Shikoku Pilgrimage.

Missing Post Office

Reviewed By David-Ogi - Takamatsu, Japan

This place is something special and quite unique. The building is the actual former post office of Awashima. And the old man you will most likely meet there is Nakata-san, the former postmaster. However, nowadays the Post Office is a very special one as it collects and receives letters with no recipients from anonymous people. You can read them there, and even write one.
It's one of those places, unique in the world, creating an alternate and beautiful reality.
