Kandy (Sinhalese: මහනුවර Mahanuwara, pronounced [mahanuʋərə]; Tamil: கண்டி, pronounced [ˈkaɳɖi]) is a major city in Sri Lanka located in the Central Province. It was the last capital of the ancient kings' era of Sri Lanka. The city lies in the midst of hills in the Kandy plateau, which crosses an area of tropical plantations, mainly tea. Kandy is both an administrative and religious city and is also the capital of the Central Province. Kandy is the home of The Temple of the Tooth Relic (Sri Dalada Maligawa), one of the most sacred places of worship in the Buddhist world. It was declared a world heritage site by UNESCO in 1988.

It is located in the royal palace complex which houses the Relic of the tooth of Buddha. Since ancient times, the relic has played an important role in local politics because it is believed that whoever holds the relic holds the governance of the country. Kandy was the last capital of the Sinhalese kings and is a UNESCO world heritage site partly due to the temple. The temple which houses the Sacred Tooth Relic of the Buddha is one of the holiest shrines in the entire Buddhist world.

The temple is beautifully decorated. The floral offering tables are full to bursting with blooms. Take time to notice the roof and wall paintings. You are allowed to take photographs inside the temple. The air is filled with incense and the scent of the flowers.

This is very close to the Temple of The Tooth and a very peaceful spot. A very friendly young man who maintained the cemetery gave us an excellent and informative introduction to the place. Many British garrison members and their families buried here, many of whom died from malaria or cholera in the early days of the garrison, as well as one who was hit by a cricket ball! Well worth a visit.

Formerly known as Pitakande Military Cemetery, it was acquired originally by the military authorities, and was subsequently taken over by the Commission as a permanent war cemetery. Kandy is in central Sri Lanka, 910 metres above sea-level. It is 121 kilometres north-east of Colombo, from which it is easily reached by road. From the Botanical Gardens at Peridenya, take the road to Kandy. Just past the Gardens, take a left turning at the roadside direction sign, down Lady Magdalene Drive. The Cemetery is approximately 1.5 kilometres along this road.

Any Commonwealth War Cemetary is worth a visit and this is no exception. Beautifully laid out and so well maintained there is nothing deathly about it. To walk around the lines of stones and see the sacrifices that we’re made is always very sobering and thought provoking.

i want alone in a motorbike. Peaceful place. But when it is a poyaday or a festival day, there are more crowd and not a very good day to visit there. It makes very beautiful view from the distance.

Spent a couple of hours exploring this park. Once past the entrance we weren’t inundated by monkeys and could enjoy the walk. As many people have said, the map they give you is useless, as is google maps. The cave was super creepy.

After the hordes of visitors in the 'cultural triangle', many locals, it was pleasant surprise to be one of only three couples at this informative place. Short but sufficiently detailed guided tour to see how a tea factory worked. Free cup of tea. Shop, but almost all tea! vey worthwhile.

We were so excited that we could climb to the top of the iconic white Buddha. After paying a small entrance fee we started climbing the stairs only to find out that the last few flights were closed. Very disappointing. It would be nice if someone told us.

The palace is amazing, with gorgeously painted walls and amazing old buildings. If possible get a guide who can explain everything to you. I would recommend going in the early hours for the ceremony and because there is not a lot of tourists.
The original audience hall is constructed with wood. It is a joy to visit with so much history
I used to visit Kandy Dalada Maligawa (Tooth Temple) often. This is one of the favourite place of mine and for lots of travelers.
In the ancient time, this place is used by the Kings to address locals as well as ministers. if you visit here, you can see great wood crafts which is unique to the Kandyan Kingdom. Although this place is located in a high ground but exposed to direct sunlight. The inside of it is amazingly cool and comfortable to stay for some time.
This is a very nice old palace. Even though most of the places where the kings used are not allowed, but you get a good view of the first level inside view. It is one of the most well preserved palaces in the world.
Sacred and surreal, a wonderful glimpse of the ancient Kandyan architecture, so much to see, a best time would be to attend the festivities at 5 -6 am then proceed to look around the sacred premises as the morning sets in.
It is really an important place in Kandy. You must visit this place because it has ancient value of Sri Lanka.
You can imagine how impressive this Palace must have been when visitors and guests could see the Sri Lankan wealth of high Standard.
Been there many times, highly recommend that you to visit. You also have to remember that the Sacred Temple of the Tooth relic and few other 500 year old attractions found around the area to see as well.
The Kandyan palace and the temple of the tooth relic are the most important attractions you must see in Kandy.
