Kirkehelleren

Helgeland has most amazing Islands, but my favourite is clearly Traena Islands, which include Sanna, to my mind the most iconic island in the whole region.
In clear weather, Sanna with its fantastically shaped Mountains can be clearly seen from far away (a.o. from Donna or Tonnes) and especially from a distance looks simply fantastic (and mysterious...).
A visit to Helgeland is not complete without a tour to Traena in my opinion.....
From nearby, the Mountains (towers) are less mysterious with the exception of Kirkehelleren, which is a natural Cathedral. An amazing music festival is organized here every year in the second July week end, attracting thousands of young people.

Torghatten

Torghatten, with its distinctive hole through it, is known both nationally and internationally. Petter Dass, our famous clergyman and poet, described the mountain as “an eye that keeps watch over Nordland’s people and riches – and which never sleeps. Torghatten offers the wild and untouched, excitement and atmosphere and people appear tiny as they walk through the 160 m long, 25-75 m high and 12-27 m wide hole, like in an enormous hall.

We passed by this mountain while sailing north. According to legend a troll king shot an arrow to save a troll maiden and the arrow went through a hat which fell down and became the mountain with the hole. The mountain looks very much like a hat and the hole is easily visible from off shore. There is a trail that goes up the mountain and through the hole.

Christmas decorations helped to add sparkle, not just the town or Bronnoysund but also this new shopping centre. About 30 shops and a bank. Clothing, electrical, jewellery, gifts and others including a supermarket underneath where there is also a car park. A short stroll along the quayside from the Hurtigruten dock. The more impressive entrance is from the attractive Main Street, Storgata.

We arrived by the Hurtigruten ship and were amused by the monument on the pier - explaining that the town of Bronnoysund is 840 km from both the most northerly point of the country, North Cape, and the most southerly, Lindesnes. The harbour is sheltered and pleasant. However Brønnøysund is also notable as the town nearest Torghatten mountain - where it is possible to hike up to the hole and on through to the other side. An experience of a lifetime!

On a brief stop in Bronnoysund, we went into the Lutheran Church. It is surprisingly large for such a small community, beautifully but simply furnished in the typical Lutheran style.
When we were there the organist was practising, completely oblivious to our presence. The music was so beautiful, and she was so engrossed, she never heard our 'thank you.'
If anyone Reading this review goes to Bronnoysund Church, and the organist is there, please thank her on our behalf!!

Bronnoysund harbour

Reviewed By MargretEA - Vollen, Norway

We arrived in the port of Bronnoysund and the hurtigruten ship (Coastal Express ship) docked in the sheltered harbour. Walking towards the pier, we came across a simple rock monument topped by a signpost saying that we now stood midway between the most northerly and southerly points of Norway. 840 km both to Lindesnes in the south and North Cape in the north.
Brønnøysund is also the town closest to the famous mountain Torghatten which has an amazing hole right through the centre. It is possible to walk right through the hole. You get there by crossing the town bridge and along route 54 for about 12 km. You then have an hour's walk up to the hole. An experience of a lifetime!
