November 24, 2021 Venice Greaves

Like Rome, Bamberg sits on seven hills, though these are lush, green Bavarian ones. You’ll find all sorts of architecture here, so enjoy exploring the cobbled streets. Plenty of shopping and museums await you, as do nine different breweries. The city loves markets and festivals, especially around Christmas.

Bamberg Altstadt

From the 10th century onwards, this town became an important link with the Slav peoples, especially those of Poland and Pomerania. During its period of greatest prosperity, from the 12th century onwards, the architecture of Bamberg strongly influenced northern Germany and Hungary. In the late 18th century it was the centre of the Enlightenment in southern Germany, with eminent philosophers and writers such as Hegel and Hoffmann living there.

This beautiful UNESCO town has managed to maintain its medieval feel which makes for a very interesting walk I through the old town. The highlight for us was the walk along the river, over the bridge to the connecting buildings, view of little Venice and the jail and on to the Cathedral. The view of the Altstadt from the river is stunning! A speciality of this town is the smokey bacon flavoured beer which is an acquired taste! A lovely town to walk and explore!

Bamberg Cathedral

Reviewed By NeedPivo - Gaithersburg, United States

This is one of the most impressive German cathedrals I've ever visited; with the four towers (two were under scaffolding), the Bamberger Dom is a superb example of Late Romanesque design. In addition to some great art and sculpture, such as the Bamberg Horseman and the Veit Stoss Altar, the church houses the tomb of Pope Clement II, the only pope who is laid to rest north of the Alps. Adjacent is the Diocese Museum, if you are into this. Certainly, a MUST visit when in Bamberg.

Alte Hofhaltung

Reviewed By Onleaveagain - Stratford-upon-Avon, United Kingdom

Situated next to the cathedral these old half timber framed buildings with a cobbled courtyard is very impressive. They look beautiful with large pitch roofs and flowers along the first floor balconies. The courtyard was used for filming part of 'The Three Musketeers'. Access is free and can be combined with a visit to the cathedral and nearby New Residenz with it stunning rose garden. Only need half an hour to wander round unless the museum is visited at the same time.
