Like Rome, Bamberg sits on seven hills, though these are lush, green Bavarian ones. You’ll find all sorts of architecture here, so enjoy exploring the cobbled streets. Plenty of shopping and museums await you, as do nine different breweries. The city loves markets and festivals, especially around Christmas.

Schlenkerla, the historic smoked beer brewery

In the middle of the old part of Bamberg, directly beneath the mighty Cathedral, one can find the historic smoked beer brewery Schlenkerla. First mentioned in 1405 and now run by the Trum family in the 6th generation, it is the Fountain of Original Schlenkerla Smokebeer (in German language it's called "Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier"). The smoked beer is here at the brewery tavern still being tapped directly from the wooden barrel according to old tradition. "Even if the brew tastes somewhat strange at the first swallow, do not stop, because soon you will realize that your thirst will not decrease and your pleasure will visibly increase."

If you are in Bamberg, you just must go to this picturesque bar and drink one or five smoked beers. They are amazing!

Centrally located in the old town. The weather at the end of September was warm enough to enjoy a meal outside. Good choice of regional dishes and seasonal specials ( canterelle mushrooms are tasty and popular). I had a pork shoulder shoulder with potato dumplings tasty and very generous portion. Interesting choice of regional beer. Friendly staff and good value. Gets busy in the evening.

A friendly knowledgeable staff is just the beginning. The beer selection was good - and the pizza was delicious. We each ordered a different one and shared. One of the surprises was the size of the individual pizzas - each single pie could easily serve a couple.

This off the beaten path spot is worth the slight hike to get there. The service was very fast and friendly, with the waiter offering us tips on places not to miss in Bamberg. We sampled a frothier version of the city's renowned smoke style beer and enjoyed traditional German food in the charming bier garden complete with a lovely view of the city below. I thoroughly enjoyed the boiled beef in horseradish sauce. My niece loved her wurst with sauerkraut, as well. Excellent choice.

We were greeted by the nicest server who clearly read our minds as he brought us Rauchbier immediately! Smokey but not heavy, it carries an almost bacon-y scent and is smooth and delicious! The food was excellent, especially the Zanderfish.

Delicious meal all made with fresh, local produce. Fresh, healthy & hearty interpretations of international fare, falafel, bruschetta, quesadilla, & more, plus creative twists on regional German dishes. Options for vegetarians, vegans, omni & carnivores. Everything made to order, beautiful and tasty, fresh salads. We ate in the garden, under the trees, peaceful and beautiful. Excellent beer, although we should have walked or taken the bus rather than driven our rental so that we could have indulged a bit more with beer and great wine options. Just the 2 of us but also good option for families with kids with space to play. A great find off the beaten tourist path and overpriced mass produced "typical German" meals of the city center. Worth the visit to recharge batteries and get back to healthy tasty eating.
Portions are not small and we ordered appetizers and main courses so had no room for desert. Still wondering about the Okomisu and craving a taste!

Restaurant Alt-Ringlein

Our kitchen is open all day from 11 am to 10 pm and serves Franconia regional specialties. Crispy Schauferla, pork sausages, Franconia Sauerbraten, Bamberger Krenfleisch (beef in horse-radish sauce), etc. Bamberg is famous for beer, in particular, smoke beer. We have two to try and compare. One from the brewery Special and the Schlenkerla Rauchbier . Of course we have a lager, Ungespundets (a U) and Wheat beer. The wine drinkers will also find something here. We serve wines of the Wine Cellars of Wurzburg , both by the glass , as well as Bocksbeutel.

The restaurant is authentically traditional, with wood floor and furniture and a large "Kachelofen" (tile stove or masonry heater). It's a nice space. The food is equally traditional, serving the meat dishes found in all the other franconian restaurants in Bamberg and the region. My partner's beef dish was good but not great. I had the Turkey breast with french fries and vegetables (couldn't face another hefty meat dish): the Turkey was too dry, the fries so-so. The Bavarian cream and chocolate mousse dessert was a disappointment. It came in a tiny class jar about the size of an espresso cup, with about one-fifth chocolate mousse (two teaspoons) and four-fifths Bavarian cream. I've never had the latter but this was a tasteless, white gelatin-based substance. Next to this a great heaping of whipped cream with some chocolate sauce drizzles - the whipped cream tasted like out of a can. I would probably recommend coming here for a beer.

Authentic atmosphere-feel, sit with the locals and enjoy really good German food -"get to the point" waitresses. Trout was excellent, juicy pork meat with sides of sauerkraut & boiled potatos, the apple dessert (local speciality) was fantastic - crispy baked slices - YUM. Very affordable for the 4 of us, 3 course dinner with a round of smoked beer & local white wine with main course @ Euro 22/pp.

Could be the best spot to sit outside and eat to people watch. It is located right on the main intersection in old town by the bridge and Schlenkerla. We walked right up and grabbed a table for dinner. The food is typical Bamberg and good - but not outstanding. Service though is excellent and very friendly.

DISTINCTIVE, UPSTANDING AND GENUINE: WHAT DEFINES US AS A BREWER IMG_2036 Tradition and craftsmanship – for us, these are not just selling points, and most definitely not myth. We are a family owned and operated business, run with conviction and passion for over four generations. We’ve been doing it simply for the sheer pleasure and enjoyment of our work. And because we have a very specific idea of what an outstanding beer must have: Character. We leave the cheap beer to the mass production industry. We don’t get bent out of shape over producing a few more hectoliters. On the contrary, we are a proud, yet not sooo small, private brewery in Upper Franconia. For centuries we have been calling Bamberg’s Wunderburg our home. Family-owned and firmly rooted in the region since 1895. Then, as now, committed to the Bavarian Purity Law of 1516. We enjoy our success, but always remain fully aware of our responsibility. brauereiWe work with confidence in our age-old craft, and can therefore keep a clear head for the present. We are inquisitive and move forward with new ideas for the future. Because, when it’s all said and done, pairing the art of our brewing tradition with the sophistication modern technology (along with the occasional surprise) you can truly taste the difference in each of our nine Mahr’s beers.

A group of us went here for our weekly Thursday Stammtisch, tho on Wednesday due to the next day being a holiday. There were 5 of us, and at first, upon arrival and half way thru our meals, we could carry on a normal conversation, but then about 7pm we started seeing the tables filling up and the noise level got so loud that some people played cards instead of talking and we were all trying to yell into each other's ears to talk.
I ordered the Wild Peg Ragout, yummy! lots of tasty not sweet sauce with some wild pig pieces in it, also tasty nicely cooked, but not very many pieces and no veggies in there which would have added a lot to it. I did have a Knoedel, which was basically a potato that is mashed and then put back together in a ball with paprika on top and cooked, the consistency is similar to polenta, and I used it to scoop up the sauce. The "blue" Kohl, really red cabbage, in a separate bowl that was also good sized, so with my meal, I ended up satisfied, but not too stuffed. The cabbage was slightly sweet and good. I also had an Apfel Schorle, and my spouse had the house beer, a pilsner, and then a Radler, along with 3 playing card sized wiener schnitzels with sauce and french fries, which he enjoyed, and then one of the others ordered the asparagus with Hollandaise sauce and ham, which was a good sized plate with 10 pieces of roasted asparagus, nicely cooked and tons of sauce, then another had the same thing I did. All in all a great place to have a reasonably priced meal, some very good sauces, but the place is not very good acoustic wise, and the service is what some people call typical Bamberger, terse to the point of rudeness.
I would recommend this place but not too late or there won't be any possibility to chat.
