Ape Index

Ape Index is an indoor bouldering, ninja warrior and obstacle race gym. We have a large bouldering wall and many ninja warrior and obstacle race obstacles and climbing training aids. We offer a training environment for children, beginners and supermen. There is something to pull every muscle in every direction and under every duress imaginable. You can learn to balance, swing, jump. You will get stronger, more supple, more agile and more aware. You can build strength, and not just specific single plane pushing or pulling strength, but overall strength from your toes to your head, pushing, pulling and gripping. You can develop power, not lifting power, but explosive pulling and jumping power. Then you can work your strength endurance on the pegboard or power endurance on the salmon ladder, or overall endurance by running through the obstacle courses.

We have just had our sons 8th birthday party at Ape Index. Where he also had his 7th birthday! Both times the experience has been brilliant from start to finish. Both Alex and Nigel are friendly and laid back which makes the whole experience really rather pleasant! The party offers great value for money compared to many more obvious venue choices. Nigel was endlessly patient with the 18 excitable 7/8 year olds and managed to control them without ever being cross. The kids all really enjoyed it. You get as much free time to play afterwards as you want, which is fantastic. Overall a brilliant birthday party at a great venue.

Leicester Guildhall

Leicester is privileged to have one of the best-preserved timber framed halls in the country dating back 600 years. The Guildhall is a historic building and the oldest building still in use in the city. It was Leicester’s first police station and between 1876 and the 1900’s and saw many unsavoury characters pass through its doors. The Great Hall itself was built in about 1390 as a meeting place for the Guild of Corpus Christi (a small but powerful group of businessmen and gentry) and it’s also believed that Shakespeare performed here during Tudor times. Today, the Guildhall is best known as an excellent performance venue, attracting acts from across the country. It’s also known as a museum where visitors can step back in time and come face to face with Crankie Gemmie and Emma Smith, two of Leicester's notorious pick-pockets who can be found lurking in the Victorian police cells. The museum is also home to the Medieval Leicester galleries and The White Rose Cafe.

This guildhall was interesting and had many original features from the time of use. The mayor's room was amazing. The little signs regarding not touching anything were even very funny. This was a free admission and even had activity sheets for children to add it. The old hall was lovely too and to think it was in use until the 20s shows the longterm use of the building. Fantastic little museum.

What a wonderful museum. It is packed full of exhibits including, dinosaurs, natural history, Egyptian artefacts, arts and crafts, ceramics, Victorian art. My favourite was the exhibition of children’s clothes. They were so intricately made with fine needlework and stitching. Children would enjoy going through the tunnels in the wild life section. So did I!

Rockingham Castle

Set on a hill overlooking five counties, Rockingham Castle was built by William the Conqueror. The Castle was a royal residence for 450 years. In the 16th Century Henry VIII granted it to Edward Watson and for 450 years it has remained a family home. The pre-dominantly Tudor building, within Norman walls, has architecture, furniture and works of art from practically every century including, unusually, a remarkable collection of 20th century pictures. Twelve acres of formal and wild garden command splendid views over the surrounding countryside. The Castle is open to day visitors on Sundays and Bank Holiday Mondays from Easter through to September and from June on Tuesdays as well. Groups are welcome on open days or by pre-arrangement for a private guided tour on weekdays. The beautifully appointed Castle Gift Shop is situated in the courtyard along with our licensed Walkers House Tearooms which serve lunches, cream teas and wonderful homemade cakes.

And with rooms to hire for meetings, too! Melton Mowbray may style itself the Rural Capital of Food; the museum is the key to understanding how that claim came to be made (Cattle - Cows - Milk - Stilton Cheese (& Butter) - Whey - Pigs - Pork - Pies, from pigs and local flour mills). But it also has really interesting local features on Melton's efforts in the World Wars (Defence Animals Centre, Auster aircraft, etc) and of course the inevitable history of Foxhunting in the Shire Counties. Good opening hours and helpful staff - try it. You won't be disappointed.

We enjoyed a great day out at this event. The Manor House has been very well refurbished and the buildings, and so many of the age related contents, are displayed to their best effect. Even in the depth of winter, the staff here have brought the site alive for today’s event. A lot of trouble has been taken to decorate everywhere and “real life” enactors in period costume were very good and helpful in their explanations. We enjoyed turkey cobs and tea in the cafe. Why would anyone NOT visit here? So much to see. Well done to all concerned, and “No”, I have no connections or business interests here!

We were invited to the Tigers v Gloucester recently including hospitality. My wife and I decided to travel by train - which was excellent and only 14mins walk from the station. Welford Rd Stadium is a compact ground with easily accessed parking and public transport links. The hospitality suite was very well organised with plenty of staff and a couple of relatively famous speakers. The food was excellent. Even better was the result - Tigers won.

I like this museum for the way it focuses on the detail of day to day life in the past - the toys, the old street, the shops. It's interesting, especially as some of the exhibits are from living memory! My kids particularly like the bit about Daniel Herrick and call it 'The Fat Man's House'!

Visited Farndon Fields farm shop to use a couple of gift vouchers my wife’s sister gave us as a present for our Golden wedding anniversary, I’ve never been a fan of afternoon tea most hotels I’ve eaten afternoon tea are a bit of an afterthought and highly priced at that. However this is not the case at Farndon Fields their version of afternoon tea is of a different order perfectly sized sandwiches fresh home made scones just the right amount of jam and clotted cream, beautiful two bite cakes of a high quality sweet pastries made with all butter with a superb macaron, we enjoyed this with a nice bottle of Prosecco. Would we visit again absolutely my wife wants to try the savoury version.
