Top 10 Things to do Good for Kids in Fujian, China

August 21, 2021 Veronika Gaddis

Fujian (Chinese: 福建; pinyin: Fújiàn; pronounced [fǔtɕjɛ̂n] ( listen)), formerly romanised as Foken, Fouken, Fukien, and Hokkien, is a province on the southeast coast of mainland China. Fujian is bordered by three provinces: Zhejiang to the north, Jiangxi to the west and Guangdong to the south, along with Taiwan 150 km to the east, across the Taiwan strait. The name Fujian came from the combination of Fuzhou and Jianzhou (a former name for Jian'ou) two cities in Fujian, during the Tang dynasty. While its population is chiefly of Han origin, it is one of the most culturally and linguistically diverse provinces in China.

As part of a Viking Ocean excursion, we visited Gulangyu Island and enjoyed the scenery, Shuzhuang garden, and the piano museum. There is a cultural tradition on the island which also features mansions and impressive European style buildingd and bridges. I have numerous photos of our experience on the island.

Nanputuo Temple

Unfortunately when we visited there, it was partially under renovation, so some house have been closed for visitors. Also the access to the botanical garden was closed I’m not sure if this is because of COVID-19. A few years back when I visited the temple the first time the gate was open. I like this temple because it’s not over crowded and also the decoration is a mix between the traditional Chinese decor and a modern touch. I find it calming to go there, but in these days there is a lot of entrances procedure with health code and showing the passport.

Drum Mountain (Gu Shan)

Reviewed By bob19472016 - Stratford, New Zealand

Firstly, there are a lot of road works around the base of the mountain (New Fuzhou Metro) so allow extra time - buses stop a couple of stops short of entrance. Walk up is only 2000 steps. Pick your time of day before the heat of the day. Plenty of rest places on the way up and down and of course for the major rest and relax before the coming down. The steps on the left hand side route are more even and easier than the ones in the middle route. There is of course Cable car and motor car access too.
