What an amazing day. We were picked up in an air conditioned minibus at the quay when we were tendered off the ship. Gil was waiting for us and we drove to the Tapajos National Forest - about an hour out of Snatarem. We were treated to Gil's very interesting and colourful family history and when we arrived at the forest, we drove to a clearing where an excellent lunch of local food was provided. Local caipirinha was on offer as well as soft drinks and several Brazilian fruits we had not seen before - all very tasty. We saw Brazil nuts being taken out of their pods and sliced with a machete before tasting them fresh from the tree. We had a demonstration of latex collection for the rubber tree and even saw an owl moth come out of its crysalis as we started to walk through the forest where Gil played as a boy. Gil told us about all the plants and wildlife as we went along. /the giant ants were a treat to watch as they busied themselves taking food to the nest. We sa the King vultures as they posed on the high branches of a tree and several very large spiders waiting for prey to land in their webs. There were large iridescent blue butterflies flitting about but you could not get a photo as they were never still long enough but so pretty to watch. There were smaller yellow and brown butterflies collecting nectar from the flowers as we went to spend a penny in what must have been the only western style loo in the forest. We met some local people who had set up the lunch for us and chatted to them about their lives in this plant-rich part of the country. On the way back we visited Belterra briefly with a history of Henry Ford and his doomed rubber business. It was only fitting that we should visit Gil's home at the end of the visit for more drinks and to meet the family! The view from his verandah is to die for and I can't wait to go back and spend more time there!

Aneasy walk from the where the cruise ship tenders dock to "downtown and the beach". Note the quotation makke. Beer is cold and $3 U.S./liter...My favorite is ANTARTIC!! Beach is white sand with refreashing water!
