Top 10 Seafood food in Sandown, England, United Kingdom

Find out what Seafood restaurants to try in Sandown. Sandown is a seaside resort town and civil parish on the southeast coast of the Isle of Wight, England, which neighbours the town of Shanklin to the south, with the village of Lake in between the two settlements. Sandown Bay is the name of the bay off the English Channel which both towns share, and it is notable for its long stretch of easily accessible golden sandy beach. It is the site of the lost Sandown Castle. Whilst undergoing construction, this was attacked by a French force which had fought its way over Culver Down from Whitecliff Bay, resulting in the French being repulsed. It was built too far into the sea and constantly suffered erosion, until now reduced to a pile of rocks. Later forts in the town include the Diamond Fort (named after its plan), built inshore to replace the castle and which fought off a minor attack from privateers (probably French) in 1788, and the present "Granite Fort" at Yaverland, which is now the zoo. Together with Shanklin, Sandown forms a built up area of 21,374 inhabitants.

I’ll start with the Menu - what is published online is NOT the menu they run by. You have 20% of the online menu running in the actual establishment. What happened as soon as I got there? Sat down, nice area, great view, looked at the specials board, agreed on an order. What happened as soon as I went to the til to make the order?None of the staff were competent with the til. Guessing my starter was £5.95, when in fact £4.50. Everything ordered was followed by staff asking each other “how much is that?” “Where is that on the til?” for 5 minutes. In justice to the staff behind the counter, they are friendly and approachable. Possibly summer holiday employees, good for you! However, management shouldn’t have allow staff who handle cash, alcohol and the til to be untrained and lacking competency. I also ordered some bar olives, £2, one staff said to the other ‘how many olives do I get out for £2?’ Hahah. No staff mentioned any food on the menu that isn’t available. After we ordered, what happened? 10 minutes later one of the employees approached our table saying one of the specials we ordered they don’t actually cook anymore. Why’s it on the board? ‘I’ve been meaning to wipe it off’. As the menu in person was vastly more limited than the one online, there was nothing else wanted to replace it. Went up to the bar, asked for a refund of the order. Refunded just the main, when we asked for the full refund. Reluctant to provide us with a full refund as starters were already being cooked, which is not our problem. Full refund was only available in cash as untrained on the card machine. Train your staff so they don’t have to be put in humiliating situations, or get better staff.

One of my friends had found this place but hadn't tried so we went together with another couple of friends and my daughter. When we arrived we giggled at the name of the shack and were welcomed by the owners who clearly liked the reaction their chosen name gave to customers. Already we felt at ease. Each choice on the menu looked delightful and at reasonable prices. 3 of us had prawns in a brioche bun (2 non spicy and 1 cajun). My daughter had mackerel in a brioche bun. One had scallop balls (I think they were). The salad items were also very fresh. It was also nice to see mayo & dressings from the garlic farm being used. Great to be serving local items with the fresh fish. The fish was fresh, tasty and absolutely perfect. We were absolutely delighted with our choices. My only wish is my daughter and I lived on the island so we could visit regularly. Our friends live there so sure they will be back. We definitely will visit next time we go over.Thank you What a lovely review - thank you so much! You're exactly right about the name of our business, it really is a talking/giggling point It was so lovely to meet you all & we're so happy that you enjoyed your 'Shack experience'! We're really proud of the Island and all it's fantastic produce, so we want to use as much of it as we can. We do hope to be able to welcome you back to our Shack soon.

The Corner Grill House

Reviewed By OscarWarwickshire

Let me briefly talk you through my one and only experience of this place. A few days ago I took my wife out for dinner. We went to the Corner Grill. On entering, we were not so much greeted as challenged with a "Have you booked?" question from a female member of staff who I assume was the manager. Ironic considering that the place was, apart from two or three covers, deserted. We told her we hadn't and she waved towards the general restaurant area, effectively telling us that we could sit anywhere we liked on the tables laid for two people. We sat ourselves down and after a few minutes the same lady came over to us. She slapped a couple of menus down on our table. She told us that there was no swordfish and walked off again. It was all a little bit abrupt and to be honest, got my back up a little bit. The icing on the cake came moments later when we heard raised voices coming from around a corner. There was lots of shouting, loud laughter and lots of swearing with the 'F' word used liberally. The manager shouted across the restaurant to whoever was creating the disturbance, effectively asking them to keep the noise down. It was clear that she was shouting at staff and not customers. Our initial impression of the restaurant was not favourable and we decided that in the circumstances we would not be staying. As we left, I looked round the corner and saw that the shouting and swearing had been coming from a couple of young lads in the kitchen. They saw that I was not happy and the manager, when I told her that we were leaving and why, gave them a look. One of the young lads clearly found it amusing because he sarcastically and rather mockingly shouted "Oops!" as we walked out.I can't comment on the standard of food, but I can comment on the standard of the staff. There is no doubt that those I encountered on that night were atrocious. The manager, if that's what she is, couldn't have been less bothered and the kitchen staff acted like out and out yobs. I will not be going back.I patiently waited for this review You had been asked if you had booked as there was a booking at 9pm so we could confirm if it was you or still to arrive. Why not be honest? You left as you heard from the kitchen not swearing at all however about a same sex marriage which you said upon exit is disgusting so in 2019 if a little conversation of a friend gettinf married to yes his 2 males makes you sick and feel thw need to leave then im glad you left as to be honest your very small minded and stuck in a past life It's 2019 not 1920

Fantastic return visit to Vernon’s Cottage, which is simply our favourite restaurant on the island. From the lovely owners whom we sat and spoke to and whom talked openly talked about their resident ghost, to the fantastically fresh cooked food, to the romantic / relaxed candlelit ambiance, all was superb and faultless in every way.The food was tasty, well priced, good value for money and fresh. The service was quick and the food piping piping hot. It was also so nice to have that personal touch of chatting with the owners, in such a relaxed, beautiful environment.Would most definitely recommend and will certainly look to return.

The Beach Shack

A family-run licensed beachside cafe with indoor seating and a new, large roof terrace. Casual dining and drinking by the sea.

You get what you hope for in the beach shack. Some seafood options, including the perennial favourites of fish and chips, burgers, a very nice sea view, friendly service with a smile, and dogs are welcome, both outside on sunny days and indoors when you are postponing the return walk. We had a pleasant light lunch, I chose the avocado and crab stack, would have liked the lobster but unfortunately not available, the food was tasty, with a small salad and a chunk of crusty brown bread, not an enormous plateful but perfect size for me as I had ice cream room. Husband went for Scampi and chips, again a small portion but perfectly adequate, we both had clean plates. Plan a return visit when friends come to visit, maybe I will be lucky and lobster will be on the menu.
