Travelled inland from the coastal resorts to this village Taverna following up on a family recommendation. If you want something different from the typical restaurant menu you must try this, superb friendly hospitality, varied Cretan menu of superb dishes. We had an idea of what we wanted to try but upon waiter recommendation went with a variety of different dishes to share. Food quality was exceptional, the salad served in a pastry bowl, all of which could be eaten from its presentation plate - very tasty, the beef dish was just so tender, the local twisted pasta covered in cheese delightful. I could go on. This place is a hidden gem, well worth the picturesque drive to get there. Friendly staff in great surroundings which is not to be missed!

Most reviews wax lyrical about the proximity of the sea, the views from the rooms and of course the food, but they miss describing why come here and what is the spirit of not just the taverna but this wild south facing coastline with the backdrop of a huge mountain. This is another Crete, I suggest not to be missed, but it's not for everyone. The sun rises late and sets early behind the Mountains, the terrain is born of monstrous geological events and often there can be strong winds. But this is what makes it unique. Enter from the top mountain and leave by the winding coastal road to Tripetri and don't be scared of the sandswept last kms to Tripetri along the beach. The swimming at the taverna is ok, not brilliant unless you follow the goat track behind the taverna west and to a delightful cove of many coloured stones 200 m away..or walk a few km in the other direction to see all colours of marble fused into volcanic lava rocks and flattened slabs. This is part of getting to experience one of the wildest parts of Crete. The rooms are modest and small and well appointed and covered by many other reviews. The food is some of the best we have eaten in our many years visiting Crete. Try the salad with local onion-like bulbs or the freshly caught fish. So come here for the experience and realise this is not some soft place to just come, stay and leave but it is rugged, wild, tough with real character. I hope I did it justice in trying to describe its genius loci.

Taverna Mariou is absolutely one of the most delicious places to enjoy a meal in the South of Crete. Always great food, service and atmosphere. Anything you order is delicious. These owners are passionate and educated about food, presentation and service. It is definitely a must visit.

Everytime we're anywhere near the Plakias area we make a point of coming to Mesogeios Taverna, right in front of the beach in Damnoni.
Beautifully arranged tables with plenty of shade and a constantly friendly service, wether you come for a drink, for breakfast or for lunch.
Very relaxing atmosphere and good tasting offerings all day, until 18:00 now so don't make a special journey for late dinner.
Just one of those places you always want to come back to. (but please leave some space for us)

We have been here many times and it is our favourite place for breakfast. The yogurt and honey is delicious and always served with walnuts. And the orange juice is always freshly squeezed. The owners are extremely friendly.

My cousin who lives in Crete has been to this taverna many times, and he wanted us to experience the lobster pasta. He called ahead so were sure to have it for our dinner. Everything we ordered (cretan salad, mezes, wine) was excellent. Andreas, our server and family owner, was attentive, funny, and kind. We had one of our best meals in Crete here at Mythos.

A waitress helped a woman remove meat from the bone of her supper as the meat was tough. Sounds like bad food but add that the waitress was BARE HANDED and that she had just been playing with the cat and had not washed her hands.... This is only one example. Disgusting place.

Most authentic, delicious and wonderful Greek food. Specially homemade, starting from the ingredients like tomato, own vineyard and home made wine etc........ A short walk from the centre of Spili and it is definitely worth the walk. Highly recommend to anyone who enjoys food.

We stopped at this taverna on our way from the southern coast up to Rethymno, and it was the perfect place for lunch. Everything was excellent, but the rabbit with tomato and onions and the smoked pork were particularly good. Also, they have super fast wifi. The view from the restaurant feels like you're in the Alps. Totally gorgeous.
