Family-run, popular with locals and expatriates. Recommended also by the Bradt Guide of Sao Tome amd Principe
Not quite the transcendent experience others describe, but good food well-prepared. Local joints on Parque Popular offer better food at half the price. Be aware: the location is NOT at the listed address. Find it on google maps listed as "Dona Tete"; the old location is also shown on the map as "Tete." Closed on weekends.

Set outside of the main town and on the way to the airport. The local reviews highlighted this as a must go to eat place - but I was disappointed. The fish was very well cooked and the salads interesting but when asking for beef steak it took a very long time and was not what was ordered (more like a mix grill plate)
The Terrace is nice but there is nothing to really see
Drinks were expensive and limited in choice
Some of the staff were very helpful and attentive (noticing a dropped fork immediately and replacing it) but others were not interesting in replacing drinks or getting napkins.
Overall it is a little run down, toilets are basic (but clean) and the whole restaurant could do with decorating

Apresivel place, bearing in mind the location. Excellent service, although the meal has been marked by our guide. Very good meal of fish with various accompaniments, from vegetables to fruit bread and fried plantains.
Regrettably African parrots spoke little but still gave airs of his grace.

We went to this ‘bistro’ for dinner. The first time was OK. Our waiter was friendly. We went back another evening only because there isn’t much offer close to the hotel. The second time, the waiter came to our table with another check for a surcharge saying the cashier had made a mistake with the previous check conversion and we had to pay extra over 5 € otherwise he would have that deducted from his salary.
I don’t recommend you eat the burgers. It’S the worst I’ve seen anywhere.

The surroundings at the restaurant are very pleasant. You sit on a Terrace at the edge of the beach. There's a nice breeze from the ocean.
Although the menu has a fair number of options, each time I chose something the waiter said it was not available. There is no English menu. When I asked the waiter what was available, communication was difficult. When I asked about dessert, I was given 3 options. I chose each option separately only to have the waiter come back and say they didn't have it. Finally, the waiter communicated that there was no dessert.
I had Cod Pirata style. It was average at best. There was a lot of potatoes and a multitude of black olives, but very little actual cod. It was overly salty.
It is convenient to the Pestana Ocean Resort if you want a change from the hotel restaurant. Just don't expect too much.

We tagged along with another family we met whilst in STP that had already booked the days' evening's meal at this restaurant. I had seen the ratings on TP before our trip and so I agreed that we should come along.
Odd location. By the Promenade but we approached it by the back streets. Took a while but we eventually found it. Looks like it used to be an old colonial family house. The tables and seats are set in the garden and are made out of wooden pallets, decorated in the middle with shells, sand and all marine related items over a glass top (looks great).
Atmosphere is relaxed and they know the chef by name .... soon enough he comes over (Portuguese, very, VERY young but seemingly knowing what he is talking about) and tells them that their chosen fish did not look very fresh at the market that morning and he recommends them something else. They seemed happy whereas I thought "hmmm.... did you oversleep and missed it? How could it not be fresh if it is caught overnight?
I cannot specifically remember what I had for dinner to recommend to you. To be honest, I do not rate restaurants on the food itself but how it (the restaurant in general) and they (the staff) made me feel. In this case.... 5 stars for the whole package.

Pastelaria e Restaurante, com ambiente familiar e acolhedor e "cheirinho" a Portugal! Do típico pastel de nata ao serviço de gelataria, ou o simples cafezinho, sinta-se em casa!
As the name says', this is really a very centrally located place. Although in a rather non-descript modern building the interior with the high wooden ceiling, wiht the ventilators and the according decor very much exudes an air of old Portugal. There are poems on the wall by local writers and the place is obviously run by an European lady I saw around, most probably a Portuguese, as in all the places I had been to in Sao Tomé.
We ordered at the counter and all was brought to the table by a very bored, unfriendly young black woman. The only negative point in here. The coffee was good and also the 'Pasteis de Nata', maybe the best we had in Sao Tomé, although not surprisingly far from one at Belem near Lisbon.
As we saw some people were smoking in here, others had proper meals, which apparently are also available, although the place basically seems to be a 'Pasteleria'.

An unusual modern art facility set in a warehouse which was unexpected .. hoped for more traditional art.
Look out for the unusual Tchiloli theatre illustration
A small cafe which takes a long time for snacks and drinks.
set buffet and entertainment evenings are run regularly for around 16 Euro (expensive for the area
