Arrabida Natural Park

At the beginning of the Portinho da Arrábida, considered one of the best Beaches in Europe. Not as fancy or expensive as the one next to it, but definitely more real, a restaurant with the balcony over the sea where you can see the transparent and translucent blue waters and the fishes waiting for a bit of bread to eat. The staff is very friendly with fishing know how and the fish is fresh and rich. Try the desert based on a Portuguese recipe of "Arroz doce" but with a fresh touch. A perfect example of Portuguese Seafood restaurant on the beach.

Castelo de Marvao

Reviewed By Norman E - East Sussex

The castle occupies one end of the walled village of Marvao, which stands on the long and narrow top of a small steep sided mountain. The castle itself is small and would only be an average attraction were it not for the spectacular views that it, and indeed the whole perimeter of the village, offer the visitor. As a castle it is in fact a good example of the type of fortification that resulted from crusader experience, with a tall keep, strong curtain walls and a large water cistern to enable it to withstand a siege. A bit of History: Although Marvao changed hands between Moors and Portuguese more than once before the castle and outer fortifications were built no attempt to take the town by force succeeded afterwards. In 1762 a combined French & Spanish force of about 5,000 tried a frontal assault on town and castle, defended by a very small Portuguese and British force who beat them off. A walk around the castle battlements and the outer defences looking down at the possible approaches will give you a clear insight into how easily it was defended.

Adega Mayor

<<Passion is what moves us>>, Rui Nabeiro had a dream and the work was born. Based on the know-how of a vast team, Comendador Rui Nabeiro made real and exceeded his dream. And therefore, Campo Maior, a land that only provides for those who love it, once again reveals all its splendour. Evidencing this is a legendary tradition, a unique winery and a taste that comes from the age of times. Campo Maior, formerly a wine production village, once again allows for the vine roots to drink its essence and grow the best grapes. Form and flavours come later, when the grapes receive all the care and attention that only experience and knowledge from a well-prepared and qualified team can provide. The Winery In the beautiful and untouched landscape of the Alentejo plain in Campo Maior, Siza Vieira erected an original building, a horizontal construction, painted in white and divided in two floors longwise, with a third floor intended for tourism and promotion of the Adega Mayor wines. The calmness arising from this simple construction contrasts with the complexity housed within, where monumental areas intended for production and storage go hand in hand with the social areas, designed for tasting and enjoying the wine. The 40*120 m rectangle of the winery is founded on the existing cavity and 9m walls stand tall from there. Access to the building is located at the southwest end. The architect Siza Vieira reserved the upper floor for the social and public aspect of wine. There, a tasting room was created, opening into a panoramic Terrace with a lawn and a lake, headed by a sculpted marble panel, also designed by the architect, where the silhouettes of a coffee cup, a glass of wine and a bottle overlap. This panoramic Terrace provides a view over the estate's vineyard and the olive grove, extending further to Spain and the Serra de Portalegre. Enotourism Come experience a larger and see firsthand how we design the wines from Adega Mayor. We have a wide offer of activities such as hiking, mountain biking, evidence of orientation, experiences vintage, team building activities, balloon flights, boat trips on the Caia Dam. These are some of the experiences that we provide. We will be happy to design a unique and personalized experience, if so desired.

After previously visiting the Coffee exhibition next door this was an interesting and enjoyable tour. It was conducted in English for our benefit by Tiago who showed great knowledge and enthusiasm about the wine production. We were able to taste wines at the end and made some purchases in the shop. At 4 euros each for the tour this is excellent value and a great afternoon out! Highly recommended!

Nucleo Urbano e Tradicional de Monsaraz

We stayed a night in Monsaraz and what an absolutely amazing place it is. There are many hilltop villages throughout the Alentejo but Monsaraz has something special.
It is only small and it isn't over touristic. There were just a handful of shops, which all sold tasteful and traditional goods. There are also a few restaurants which I would advise booking for. What was amazing was that this beautiful, quaint and historic town still felt quiet answer peaceful. You were able to wander the streets without constantly bumping into others. We were able to park very close to the town gates and for free. If this was in the UK it would be charging a fortune to park, rammed with tourists and shops everywhere selling tourist tat! The fact that none of these happen is fantastic.
Monsaraz has a little gem and this is watching the sunset. Booking into a restaurant that faces west, sitting on the wall or a B&B with a roof Terrace will all give you what can only be described as a magical experience.
Close to Monsaraz are historical sites as well as Europe's biggest lake. A boat tour is advised as it is lovely to look back on the town from the middle of the lake.

Did a small group tour. Outdoor processing/fermentation tanks, cask rooms, bottling area. Learned about the processes for different wines. Tasting was excellent. Crackers, jam, cheese, sliced sausages. Tried 3 whites, a sparkling white, a rose, 2 reds, and a late harvest "raisin liquor" wine. Not a red fan in general, but loved theirs.
Great afternoon, wonderful wines.
