Cafe Aras

There are two Cafe Aaras both located on the main road of Rantepao, and both good. Same owners, but the biggest of the cafes is made Muslim friendly (for instance no pork). I've had very good food in both restaurants. In both places the staff was very friendly, attentive and good at English. The atmosphere was nice in both places as well. Beautiful interior and cozy music. Definitely worth a visit.

We stopped in Rantepao for a few days while visiting the Toraja country. We tried a few local places and the inescapable Cafe Aras and finally ended up having dinner at the Mambo Restaurant. The staff is very friendly and explained the various dishes and assortment of beverages. We had a delicious dinner and a great time. The price was very reasonable. Highly recommended!

We went there twice because they have a large selection of dishes including Vg ones.
The place is bog with a lot of space. The Waiting time is low.
The food is good.
Don't seat to close to the front door if you want to avoid the screaming tv shows...

Average pizza in an average place. Not bad, not particularly good. The pizza is good thin crust but at 80k IDR + tax expensive by local standards.
You'd have to really dislike Indonesian food or be missing home a lot to go here.
Nothing special really.

Saruran Restaurant

Reviewed By DaisyClover - Melbourne, Australia

I am guessing that this restaurant has moved from Jl Diponegoro 19 to it's spiffy new premises which looks clean and attractive. It is now located a short distance beyond Rimiko Restoran a few doors further from the centre of town. It serves Indonesian Chinese with lots of rice and noodle dishes. There is a tick the box form to order which unfortunately does not exactly match the menu. It appeared to be popular with locals and was also doing lots of take-away orders.
The waitress did not have English skills but a gentleman from behind the counter came to assist us and had excellent English. It is possible to get vegetarian food. The dishes only cost a few dollars. They served cold Bintang.

Rumah Makan Setia Kawan

Reviewed By Ed-Henry - Indonesia

This is traditional Toraja food as you can get. They serve the Pa'Piong (meat cooked in bamboo) with chicken, fish or pork, grilled fish, eel cooked in black sauce, pork satay (huge skewer), and 'ban dalam' (pork intestine). They don't prepare the food in large quantity, so the earlier you come for lunch the better your chances to taste the different kind of dishes. The satay and pa'piong are their best sellers.
The restaurant is very simple and humble, and there are only a few tables. The tables near the back have a wonderful view of a valley and rice padi fields.
The food tasted ok. The satay was a bit tough. The eel tasted a bit strange. The pork pa'piong tasted ok. This humble restaurant supposedly has the best pa'piong in town. It was my first and only time (up to this time) trying pa'piong and I can't compare it with other restaurants.
The food is cheap. All dishes costed Rp. 15,000 (around USD 1.25) per serving.

We did not stay at the Pia's Poppies hotel but we did choose to take a dinner there while in Rantepao --- we were forewarned by our guide that sometimes it could be 90 minutes between ordering and the food arriving so we stopped at the restaurant in the afternoon to order our meal --- and it came promptly. My wife, our friend and I were all more than satisfied -- and the price structure was very reasonable. The owner's daughter is in charge and I think it is her brother who is the cook (it used to be their father in this family operation). I can easily recommend this place in a town with not too many great choices.
